What's Important to You?

Postby Avoider? » Mon Oct 27, 2008 3:56 pm

Are there things that are important to you? Are there things that you couldn’t simply turn your back on and walk away from?

I’m trying to figure out what’s important to me, and I’m having a hard time finding something, anything, that is so important to me that I couldn’t give it up. I’ve been struggling with this for some time now and it’s beginning to bother me.

There are things that I enjoy doing and have invested a lot of time, energy, and money into that I think I could easily give up and not miss it too much at all.

I’m wondering if it’s just me or is it a typical symptom of AvPD.

One thing that's really important to me is my study program. Although I'm really struggling at the moment, I know it's the right thing for me. But to me honest, my motivation might be anxiety of having no alternative mainly. I'm extremely bad at practical things. So this is my only chance to ever have a job that I don't hate.
There is also some real motivation and interest. But I can't really enjoy it at the moment.
I have one other thing that's important to me. But I can't write that here. It's something about my appearance that I want to change. In general I would say changing it would give me more freedom and would allow for a more careless life.

Actually yes University is very important to me also on reflection, it gives me a minor form of validation and is the only thing that gives me a modicum of focus in my life.

yeah, that's true for me also. And it give some structure to my life.
Actually, when I started with my bachelor program 3 years ago, it was much better. I was really focused on my study although circurmstances were not ideal (financial and family problems). I also developed a lot of other skills like working in groups, presenting, professional communication and stuff. But that program really fitted my abilities. For the first time in my life I was good at something. My way of thinking was rewarded there. I would have stayed at that university, but they don't have a master program that fits with my interests. And I had some (very stupid) personal reasons why I had to leave.
Now it's different. I have to get used to the traditional teaching methods again and to a new social situation. It's all completely new and I would so much like to take a break from that.
But they won't give me a second chance to do this program. They select only a few people per year, so I have only this one chance.

Music. I am one of those idiots who find songs that 'refect my life' and listen to them over and over.

Apart from that, what is important to me seems to change as I throw myself into something to try and get some feeling of self-worth out of it, fail and then move on.

Thank god for music (and art) it never lets me down.

What is it about the internet?

Postby Avoider? » Mon Nov 03, 2008 4:13 am

Why do you find the internet important? Why could you not live without it?

I spend a lot of time on the internet, but it's really just a diversion. It keeps me busy and make me feel like I'm not wasting time. Forums provide me a safe place to interact with others, but that's about it. If I have something else to do, I don't miss it at all.

I guess the only thing i see as important to me, is really anything to keep me busy. I like to keep my mind busy on other things, to try to keep myself from thinking about things. So i guess really technology in general is what i find important, my life even since i was alot younger revolved around computers, i guess ive always used it as a method to cope with things. I Have always like building computers, tweaking things and writing software. If i am bored, and i dont have anything to do, i always just google things, and read articles related to science, space and of course computers, and really anything relating to technology. Its pretty much about the only things i enjoy doing, and have ever really enjoyed doing....

I have to say, internet and PC are quite valuable to me as well. Other than that, I have to say music as well. I can't go for more than a few hours straight; it's amazing how it can focus emotions. There's a third but I don't know if it's important to me. It would be my study as well, but I'm the kind of person that shouldn't mix pleasure and work; If I decide to pursue something that I enjoy more serious, then I end up doubting, struggling, procrastinating, and spiralling down. Then I end up hating it until I drop it...

Hrm, this thread has been staring me in the face for some time, and I have to honestly say that I DON'T KNOW!

I used to find anything related to computers quite interesting, and in fact I am still a professional geek, but this has been losing quite a lot of appeal in the last few years. I'm sure I have other interests but nothing really critically important to me.

Although indeed I would have a hard time doing without the internet. I need it for (substitute) communication, direct access to knowledge and indeed my livelihood depends on it. In fact when it's down sometimes I find myself a bit lost...

I was actually asked this fairly recently in therapy >_>; I don't really have an answer. I basically get up, stumble through my day (read: the three rooms that make up most of my life >_>) until I eventually fall asleep to kill time. I can't think of a single thing that makes go "woo" (Ugg... just thinking about that word makes me nervous >.>; ) There are a few things I read or do to kill time, but that is about it.
