Cure for fear?

Postby Phyllo » Mon Jul 16, 2007 5:00 pm

I thought this article on slash dot was interesting. If it is in fact true, then I wonder if this could be used to effectively treat AvPD sometime in the near future.

There is always promising research in a number of mental health areas. It was only a few weeks ago that they 'cured' Autism in mice also. These tests will need to be scrutinised by many other scientists before they can even consider trying them out on humans. Even then, it'll be years before they become standard.

My brother was actually working on research of this nature too.

I came across this on slashdot too and I found the idea intriguing. I'm trying to stay away from drugs as much as possible, but this one would be tempting.

Of course, it will take many years before it will become available, if it works on humans at all.

I think test animals are the real heroes in medical science, not the doctors.

There are tons of treatments that work in mice, but not people.

Yes, that's the point I was trying to imply. I mean, you hear about research like this but we all know that - even if it works in humans - we will never hear about it in actual operation for many many years to come.

Too bad we are not mice then - they could make us live forever!

You know, I don't think we are too far from that: 'eternal' life. As medical techniques and medicine continue to improve, we are capable of prolonging lives to ever-increasing ages. The concept of a 'bionic' person living forever is fast becoming reality!

Did you ever see the picture of the mouse they genetically engineered to have a human ear grow on its back? I can dig it out of my Biochemistry college notes if you like.

...actually, this is exactly the sort of thing that Theodore Kaczynski (the 'UNA-bomber') was angry about. He would hate me for being a scientist. He was a murderer but I do think some of his views are worth looking into.

Could you be more specific? What exactly was he angry about and why? I'm curious.
