April Is Autism Awareness Month

Postby TwilightFlip » Thu Apr 08, 2010 7:51 pm

Hello everyone, long time no speak. Thought people would know 2 weeks ago it were autism awareness day on friday and april is the awareness month.

My article for the National Autistic Society is coming out on e-newsletter April 14th 2010 about the autistic me follow up, which has been approved by production team for me to write about it for them. the autistic me were also wrote up for the first one on this, its what i wrote hope you enjoyed it http://www.autism.org.uk/kirsty cant wait for the next follow up article.

The documentary is due april or may 2010 BBC 3, or BBC 1.

Autism is A developmental disability which affects how we think and communicate in our lives.

I actually like to think that ASD's is a special gift that we have because we may have difficulty in some areas but may be good in other areas.

There is Autism and there is Aspergers, which is a form of Autism. They may get diagnosed at their late teenage years or as adults this is because people grow up as children and not been recognised and not show the signs until later in life.

I am about to discuss the 3 main areas we can have trouble with there is a long list so i will list 2 or 3 examples in each of the 3 main areas.

SOCIAL COMMUNICATION

May not understand expressions

May take things said Literally.

Find it difficult to start a conversation

SOCIAL INTERACTION

Find it difficult to make and Keep Friends

Find it hard to make eye contact; it can be distressing

May not understand how others feel.

IMAGINATION

Gets distressed when routine changes (unexpected change)

May talk about there obsession a lot, this may be they want to communicate but find it difficult.

Find it difficult to understand how other people feel.

WHAT ELSE DO I THINK ABOUT OUR ASD'S

We are all different it affects is in many different ways that why we are different from others

Some of may talk but struggle, some of us cant talk. Some have talents some of them don't we are all unique.

I like to see autism in a unique and positive way of thinking that is one way of coping with having the diagnosis.

Thanks for posting Kirsty. You seem to be well-involved with the NAS and that's great to hear. I read the article through your link to and found it interesting. I had no idea that April is an Autism awareness month, but I was recently informed that a conference on Autism and Asperger's Syndrome will be taking place at my university (Leicester) in June. Unfortunately for me (who has Asperger's Syndrome), it would cost 200 GBP to attend.

Good luck my friend,
Kevin

In this day and age with the rise in disorders that were not quite as common twenty years ago, such as Alzheimer's and Autism - both neurological disorders - it is easy to worry and fret. The fear that either of these will arrive at your doorstep can fill anyone with concerns and anxiety if they let it.

Confronting the fact that your loved one may have a neurological disturbance that challenges their ability to communicate, interact and socialize with you is difficult to face. The possibility that your precious child may receive a diagnosis of autism is news that can drastically alter the course of the life you envisioned for you and your family.

As devastating as this can be it unfortunately is a fact of life for too many parents in this day and age! With the Center for Disease Control (CDC) reporting a prevalence of an autism spectrum disorder (ASD) as 1 in 110 children this is a situation that can potentially present itself to a large percentage of families across the world.

Hello everyone!

I'm trying to start a program for adults with autism. This program can be a viable career option, a learning apparatus, a tool for social network, and a bridge to the community at large. Please look at my video, it's entered into a city-wide contest and if I win I will get funding and business support to get this initiative up and running.

As a sister to a young adult with autism, I recognize the importance of facilitating this change now and not later. I have worked with countless individuals with autism as an ABA therapist and the interest is out there...we just need to come together as a community.

Here is a link to my video. Please view and be sure to VOTE for me (one vote a day)! http://www.projectwildfire.ca/mediadeta ... EAN-PLANET

Thank you and have a great weekend!
