Diagnosd at the age of 39 with Severe ADHD and other Dosrder

Postby TEAMNITRO » Sat Nov 27, 2010 6:46 pm

Hi, I was diagnosed earlier this year after struggling with substance abuse and then a ton of different anti-depressants.Once stopping the Alcohol to slow my mind down.I started dealing with the things that were always there, but never knew what was causing it. Diagnosed with Severe ADHD.After 6 months, had to see a clinical Psychologist which also diagnosed me with GAD,Panic Disorder, aalong with the ADHD, and claimed a little Agoraphobia. My family agrees with all of the diagnosis but wonder with all the Meds,if I will find another job in my field.Industrial Construction.I am required to hold certain certifications, but will have them stripped away because of the meds prescribed.I have been laid off for a year and half. Now the Anxiety of ever finding a job in my field that I will be able to prosper financially for my family, or is all left for me is the unemployment type pay from here on out. Now, the school is wanting my kids tested for ADHD,without a doubt my son has it, my daughter a little. What has any of you guys experienced with your Adult ADHD concerning work?

Dear TeamNitro,

I can't comment specifically on ADHD, but what I've experienced at work is that if you have a psychiatric condition it is better not to disclose it to your employer if you can. Why do you have to tell them that you are on medication ? If you do your job well there is no reason for them to know. Don't submit your medication receipts through your employee health plan if you have one.
Trust me there is a very good chance that your employer can use this information against you.

Dear TeamNitro,

I know it's been a while since you posted but I have just joined the board and saw your post. I was just diagnosed with ADD-D at 36. Have a pile of other conditions too. Re the medication and certifications, I would have to respectfully vote that honesty is the best policy for this stuff - if there were an accident on the job and your meds were discovered it could be bad. I used to drive a truck but had doc approval for the meds I took then. Sometimes a medical clearance is all it takes. Or, try the Vocational Rehabilitation office. Sometimes it's just time to find another line of work and with the adhd and other stuff hopefully being adequately managed you might be able to gain other skills you used to struggle with. There are jobs which do not require med-sensitive certifications and licenses. I wish you the best. I am in a similar situation. I just can't do stuff I used to be able to do and have to accept it but it is hard. -mmcookies1974
