Hi, I am new to this forum and was interested in posting to see if anyone else could answer a question I have about amphetamine prescriptions: I am curious if anyone else has ever been allowed to have more than two instant release amphetamine prescriptions at any given time. The two drugs that I would like to take are IR Dex and IR Adderall (without anything else -- as in, no XR drugs). My psychiatrist said he can only prescribe me one IR drug at a time. I'm not sure if he's not letting me get both for his own reasons (such as not wanting to look bad to the authorities for prescribing two IR drugs that could be abused) or if it is due to some sort of policy restriction beyond his control. Is it possible that a different psychiatrist might be under a different policy and would be able to prescribe these two drugs to me or is it the same everywhere?
(I would ask him directly but I have horrible communication with him -- yes, I'm in the process of looking for another.)
Does anyone know where I could look to read up on whatever existent policies there are on prescribing amphetamines in general?

That's all I wanted to ask, but if you're interested, here's my story:
I was on Adderall XR for almost two years and then recently tried out Vyvanse. I appreciate Vyvanse for writing papers (I'm a student) as well as for social situations and general life. I find that I need Adderall, however, for listening to lectures or doing any kind of complicated thinking on the spot (like class discussions or conversations with people about complicated ideas). It also is very helpful for reading, but I seem to get by okay with just Vyvanse on most things. In terms of lectures and so forth, I find I simply do not have time to compute the information that is presented to me. I am unable to hold all the different ideas in my head at one time and I get flustered. I think my difficulty with the auditory and vocal processing is due to poor working memory, a common symptom of ADHD. At first I wondered if I had Sluggish Cognitive Tempo (SCT) but none of the characteristics fit. I'm pretty sure I have the ADHD combined type. (I was curious, though, if it was possible for people with the ADHD combined type to also have SCT, or is that limited to those with the primarily inattentive type of ADHD -- anyone know?)
Interestingly, while Adderall helps with auditory and vocal processing, I find it difficult if not impossible to write a paper on Adderall. My thoughts for why this might be is because on Adderall, I find every thought to be interesting and I loose my ability to prioritize my thoughts or discern which thought is more important than another. I find I am unable to structure my thoughts at all because the trail of interest seems to continue on indefinitely. Every idea seems to be making an important contribution. Trying to limit myself doesn't seem to work. I still find I have to circle around multiple times before I am able to sort out my thoughts. Vyvanse seems to provide me a better container for my thoughts where I can stay focused on the goal and at the same time, find thoughts to help me reach that goal without getting carried away. (Have others had a similar reaction to Adderall?)
As I said earlier, I also appreciate the Vyvanse more when it comes to social situations and life in general. I find that Adderall makes me rather task oriented as well as intellectually inclined and I find that I am less interested in being social as a result. Adderall can also make social interactions seem sharp and I experience a greater level of social anxiety as a result. This was one of the main reasons that made me interested in trying Vyvanse -- I heard Vyvanse had less of a kick in comparison to Adderall and I thought this might help reduce the feeling of social interactions as being "sharp" (as well as the feeling of being driven to complete tasks, among other things). I find that Vyvanse lets me retain more of my happy, fun, spontaneous nature and makes social interactions more fulfilling.
That being said, I don't want to have to give up either of the drugs, as they each help me with different things. Currently I am taking Vyvanse and supplementing with IR Adderall for class, and sometimes for homework. This can be difficult, though, because if I take Vyvanse, I either have too little of it in my system when I am off the Adderall, or too much in my system when I am on the Adderall. I only take one dose of Vyvanse in the morning (it lasts a really long time in my system) and I am stuck with that amount for the rest of the day. IR Dex, however (the closest thing to an IR of Vyvanse), only lasts 4-6 hours (or so I hear). Assuming I like the Dex, I could then take an appropriate blend of Dex and Adderall for part of the day, while the rest of the day I could take a full dose of Dex. Both of these are IR drugs, however, and my psychiatrist says that he is unable (or unwilling) to prescribe them both. I am hoping to find a way around this. As I said earlier, I'm not sure if he is not letting me get them both for his own reasons (such as not wanting to look bad to the authorities for prescribing two IR drugs that could be abused) or if it is due to some sort of policy restriction beyond his control. Is it possible that a different psychiatrist might be able to prescribe these two drugs to me or is it the same everywhere?
