Really lazy or ADD?

Postby gp » Sat Feb 14, 2009 10:04 pm

Hey, I'm a 17 year old male, and I'm hesitant about going to my general practitioner to see if I have ADD or not... Or is it ADHD predominantly inattentive subtype? I'm not quite sure what the proper terminology is, i know i dont have any hyperactivity issues.
Anyways, I can concentrate very well on the few things I'm interested in, mainly biology, social studies and psychology. In these subjects i get grades in the high 90%, but in any other things I dont find interesting, for the life of me i cannot do. I make my parents hide my xbox and computer, and i sit in a quiet room and punch my sister if she's too noisy, but i cannot concentrate at all. The tiniest noise is a distraction, and really do try hard to force myself to do the work, and i understand it, its just sooo boring and unbelievably difficult to keep working on.
I have a history of clinical depression and I know that makes concentration difficult, but I'm not depressed anymore and its still bothering me, but its completely selective, which makes me wonder if I could possibly have ADD. In my psychology course we covered it briefly, and it said EVERYTHING is difficult to concentrate on, which makes me think I'm just really lazy. Anyways, before i go to my doctor and sound like a total hypochondiac, I'd like your opinion.

And if you do think I'm lazy, could you please give me some advice on how to not be lazy?

Hi, gp! If you're doing your best to concentrate on these subjects but you just can't, I don't think you're being lazy. I'm not an expert or anything like that, but it couldn't hurt to talk to your doctor and ask what they think might be going on.
It used to be difficult for me to concentrate on certain subjects too, when I had been depressed. Sorry this isn't much help.

people suffering from ADD, have something called "superfocus" sometimes in areas they are interested in. as you might expect, this involves alot more focus than is usual. I wouldnt trust a high school psycology class. talk to your doctor, medication can be very helpful.

I don't have an ADHD diagnosis, but I can relate to what you said. I have Asperger's, which is really similar at that point - concentration.
Sometimes it's hard to do things which you don't find interesting, and it's the big problem with ADD (ADD is 'only inattentive type' of ADHD, without hyperactivity).
I have also been depressed, and I am not anymore. I think some symptoms of depression can remain for a longer time, although we are not depressed any more. But it can not be the case if you are not depressed for a larger amount of time, just like me for example - I am not depressed for half a year any more.

About ADD - yes, you could have it. If you are trying to concentrate - but can't - you are not lazy, you are just having trouble with it.
People with ADD have 'hyperfocus' in things they are interested in, but have significant troubles with things they find boring.
You could try to find some treatment for the ADD, maybe go to a specialist?
I am sure there they will help you. I think there we are neither specialists, so going to one can be a good idea.

I have read somewhere about the GF/CF diet and there it had been written about how it helps, not only with autism, but also with AD(H)D. Read about it.

And remember, you are lazy only when you are NOT trying to concentrate and do anything you don't find interesting, because it sucks and you don't want to do it. But I believe it's not the case with you as it seems clear from your post you only have trouble with it.

sounds like ADHD-PI to me. however, be wary of docs who don't understand the high incidence of comorbid disorders in people with ADHD- because ADHD is so overdiagnosed in children it is underdiagnosed in adults (from what i've read) and so many psychs seem reluctant to settle with an ADHD diagnosis. i've seen a one or two psychs who attributed my ADHD symptoms to depression, and tried to push antidepressants on me, when my ADHD was very real and better treated with ADHD meds.

I think that as soon as you think this is impairing your functioning you should pursue a dx vigorously. Dont wait until you end up in college spending a lot of money on it but never passing any exams. Or worse, kicked out by your boss because you make too many careless mistakes.
If this is any form of AD(H)D it is not going to improve with age, it will cause you more and more trouble.

I suffered for decades with un dx'ed ADD. Its not much fun.

In short, take this seriously.
