Like or Dislike, how you know?

Postby ljg666 » Mon Mar 12, 2012 12:17 pm

Hi guys, Im currently bored with my profession. I didn't know what I wanted to do / be when I was a teenager (other wanting to be rich and thinking I would start my own business to do so) and despite being 32 I still feel the same way.

I get an idea of a profession that I think would suit me, find the details and think it sounds good etc etc. However, the next day its like the previous day never happened and then I only see the possible negatives regarding it.

This prevents me from ever starting anything / studying anything new on a longer term scale as I always lose the motivation / impetus as quickly as it begins.

On the work side of work, most jobs I have had have been just about bareable for 6 - 9 months whilst its new, but then its been a slide into mind numbing reptitiveness (and dreaming of the life I feel like I should have but never do anything to achieve it). I'd like to retrain, but what the point getting into debt again if I won't be any happier.

So, how do you determine whether you will like a paritcular job / aspect of a job if you have never done it before and whether you would like it still over a period of time?? There must be a secret to this!?

PS - current (imagined) perfect job = mortuary technician (sometimes called anatomical pathology technician) though low skilled/paid.

You wont. Unless it is a particular obsession of yours...

What is the worst that could possibly happen if the profession you choose turns out not to be what you expect or is filled with negative aspects you cannot tolerate? What I do is just take one day at a time. It may sound foolish but I dont plan for the future perse cause if I do, Id never get anything done. Whatever happens, happens and I compensate accordingly. For you, I would suggest to compile an unbiased list or have a friend or associate do so for you and if the list of pros exceed the cons then you should give it a shot. Just be sure to have something to fall back on if it does not work out; always leave room for disapointment.
To put your life in danger from time to time... breeds a saneness in dealing with day-to-day trivialities.

I would recommend a solo flight to all prospective suicides. It tends to make clear the issue of whether one enjoys being alive or not.
