What Are Your Bad Habits?

Postby Iniquity » Wed Dec 28, 2011 11:24 pm

What are your bad habits (as defined by other people)? What do other people find annoying about you? And, have you ever tried to change your habits when they were pointed out to you as being 'bad' or annoying?

Not to start any arguments, but I'm curious, do other members here annoy you in some way?

I thought about this because I was reading back on some of my own posts and I couldn't help but notice just how truly self-absorbed I am. I knew I was self-absorbed already, but I noticed I have a habit of bringing myself into the conversation almost all the time. Obviously I like talking about me A LOT. Do you think that's a narcissism thing or are most people self-absorbed and it's just a common trait among the general population?

I don't think it is narcissist.
Those that do it most are histrionic and avoidant, but many people do that.
It is extreme self-centeredness and can be annoying if you try to have a positive conversation.
There is no give and take.

I am the opposite and tend not to talk about myself. That can be annoying too. People think it is selfish in that case. Or inaccessible.

I'm the same way, but I don't think it's a bad habit. Others might though lol I don't know if it's narcissistic or not. I have narcissistic traits... so I suppose it could be.

I'm often told I'm a smart ass, not in a jokingly matter. I will mock and/or correct the idiots around me when they say stupid things or present false information as facts.

I probably have other bad habits but no one has pointed them out to me, or if they have... I didn't take note of it, because I don't care lol

Iniquity wrote: And, have you ever tried to change your habits when they were pointed out to you as being 'bad' or annoying?

Never genuinely. If it's in a situation where it's important I will try to mask them, but that's rare as I'm generally on my best fake behavior when it's needed.

None that I can think of off the top of my head. Everyone online and in person annoys me from time to time but usually in a very insignificant superficial type of way. I'm just an irritable person lol

Mainly what I find annoying, yet amusing at the same time.. is the teens/young people who come on here pretending to be AsPD or Psychopaths.

I can see how it could be related to Narcissism because Narcissists are very self-focused, but I'm not sure how you came to the conclusion that it could be related to Histrionic or Avoidant PD. Aren't Histrionics attention seekers?
Talking about yourself doesn't necessarily mean you're seeking attention. I certainly don't do it for that reason. And how does Avoidant play a role in it?

I don't consider it a bad habit either, but I've noticed in the past that other people find it annoying at times and assume I'm just doing it for attention, which is not the case at all. I just like talking about me more than anybody else. Other people don't interest me anywhere near as much as I interest myself.

I couldn't agree more, though I don't think they're pretending. Some of them seem to think they actually are a Psychopath or aren't sure, so they ask, usually expecting a positive response.

I could have written that myself lol I'm kind of conflicting and inconsistent in many ways. On one hand I'm pretty secretive by nature, but on the other hand... I love talking about myself. I also find talking about myself will often give me some insight I didn't see before.

Another plus side of it, is some people will often see me as an open book and think they know me well because I'm talking about myself and appear honest, but I withhold a lot of even change the truth slightly to paint myself in a better picture, if the situation requires it  Kind of messed up I'm sure, but oh well

Good point, I hadn't thought about it like that.

I guess if you look at narcissism and avpd on a basic level the two can be seen as similar.

I presume a narcisist will be self centred or self absorbed to the point where they see themself as superior to others. Where as an avoidant will still have those self centred thoughts but theirs will lead them to think they are inferior to other people. Both are preoccupied with themselves but their thought patterns take opposite paths.

I think talking about yourself is just a general population thing though, everyone seems to do it.

Ah, I see now. Well, I'm definitely not Avoidant. I see myself as superior, rather than inferior. I'm also very confrontational. Quite the opposite of an Avoidant.

Yes. Quite likely. Some seem to do it worse than others though.

They both talk about themselves to the exclusion of others. It is just an observation you can make by interacting with them on a general basis. In a forum it translates often into a wall of text. But others barely register on their radar screen when pathological. When interacting with someone in that mode, you also get the impression to talk to a wall. They seem the more extreme case of that pattern. It is not about attention, it is about not caring about others.

Narcissism is magnetic rather than annoying, but then once the N puts that person down, then its worse than annoying. People like an interesting story.
histrionics are annoying as they draw attention away from people inappropriately, and create drama and try involve people and that tends to be exhaustive to the people involved or the listener to their dramatic story.
Histrionics are over the top exageraters and insincere they are obvious from the get go.

When I imagine the 2, the histrionic is gesturing, rapid volume changes in voice, rapid changing mood, one minute asking about health problems and their depression the next minute taking photos of themselves and gesturing wildly about something they are excited about but you dont share their excitement.

N is more laid back over confident will be very impressive with stories and will be pleasant to be around until the blind sided slight.

I hate talking about myself not even good at it, I prefer people just ask me questions.
