Need some advice

Postby Randomname64 » Sun Nov 27, 2011 3:32 am

Hi... I just wanted some advice about something. Sometimes when I'm on my Own I start thinking about stuff, horrible stuff like what I would do if I get a phone call saying my whole family had been killed or if my gf rings me and tells me she has been cheating on me and has been playing me the whole time, there are lots more examples I could say but I think you get the picture. The problem is after I think of this I actually think that it has happened in real life and I get really Angry and upset. Causing me to punch things shout at people for no reason and think of self harming, I haven't cut myself or anything like that but I'm worried I might do something one day. It happens everytime I'm alone with my thoughts and it keeps me up most nights and I don't get to sleep until early hours. I listen to depressing songs which I don't think helps with it but it occupies me. There's no one I can tell about this. I thought I would post on here and post for some advice on what I should do. Sorry if there are typos on this I'm on my iPod, thankyou for reading :)

Oh it also happens in public places... Like i would just stare at one thing and... Basically see myself punching something or throwing my phone and smashing it, beating up some guy or something.

Hey,

You might be surprised to hear that this pattern of thoughts matches those seen in OCD, but it seems that you don't have a serious form of it. In OCD, a common process is that a thought of death or something else bad comes to the person's mind. they then adversely react to it, think more and more about it, and carry out a compulsion in order to 'quench' the obsessive/infiltrative thought. In your case, you seem to have learned to generate anger in response to the thoughts.

It is important to recognise the entire process of what is happening in your brain, which is that you receive the thought and that this is what triggesr the anger. Thus, trying to react to the thought in a different way would avoid the anger ever appearing. A good method used by those with OCD is to 'dismiss' the thoughts as silly and irrelevant as they come.

Thanks for replying so quickly, I usually try find something to distract me from it but when I try get to sleep it just gets worse so I end up losing sleep from this or from trying to distract myself, my sleeping pattern is messed up at the moment. So it's nothing to worry about? I mean like is there a chance it could progress into something more agressive. Sorry if this seems petty Im just curious because my sister is on medication and seeing a therapist weekly over something like this and I don't want that to happen to me :/

Again you for your time.

...No, it is something that I think you should be worrying about. The fact that you are losing sleep is not good at all. Lack of sleep can lead to a whole host of other problems. You really should put some effort into sorting this out. The thoughts that come to your mind are 'silly' and should be regarded as such. However, I can understand how scary they might seem to you...

Would you be okay going to your local doctor?

No I'm not confident person to person, that's why I posted on here. It does sound like pathetic when i think about it after but during it, it seems like a like a problem I need to sort out. I don't know my doctor that well and I wouldnt feel comfortable talking to him about it, because it sounds silly to me when I say it outloud. But when I think about it it seems like I need to get it sorted

That's understandable... I mean, the fear of talking openly to your doctor about this. That first step is quite scary. However, it can be taken and it can result in a better life. I never opened my mouth growing up - I never spoke a friggin' word to anyone. Now, however, I sometimes talk to much. Through everything that I have been through, I have 're trained' myself to be a talker, not a person who fails to open his mouth.

So, ask yourself this: Are you going to be the person who lets problms persists and grow worse?; or are you going to be a person who is proactive and who is in complete control of his life? When in control, issues are tackled as they come.

Take care
