Anger

Postby orevgym » Sat Jun 25, 2005 7:49 pm

My pdoc is putting a bandaid on the anger by prescribing Geodon and neurontin, I think this stinks. I want to get to the source of the anger instead of masking it. I have tried counseling many times and going to church too.
Any ideas?

Anger

Postby GAnderson » Sun Jun 26, 2005 4:35 am

Anger is a normal human emotion. It is a problem when it occurs too frequently, lasts too long, is harmful to self or others or leads to violence. Anger is not a nervous or mental disorder. Hence, it is not responsive to medical or psychological/psychiatric intervention.
It is highly unlikely that you doctor has received training in anger management.
I reccommend that you seek assistence from a professional trained in anger management. This professional should provide you with an assessment which determines your level of functioning in four areas: anger, stress, communication and empathy. A fifth category is Motivation to change.
Following this assessment, he or she should enroll you in a class to teach you skills in the areas which you score low or need the most help.
Your success in the class will depend on your investment in practicising the skills learned in the class.

When and soon after diagnosed with mental illness my anger kept me aside from the important needs that were neccessary to continue to live functionally. The issues did not make sense, they were dillusional. What will this comment mean to those who suffer anxiety disorders, need to function daily and still remain a part of a community that can be stigmatizing? I still remember those days in the small town where everybody now knows your name.
