Anger Over Perceived Taunting.

Postby Mr. Goldstein » Sat Nov 12, 2016 6:23 pm

I applied for a job that I felt I was more than qualified for several months ago and made it to the interview process. I was interviewed over the phone by someone on the other side of the United States. I thought the interview went well, but several days later I received an e-mail from the person who was making the hiring decision who lives in another country. This person sent me a standard, generic boiler plate message saying “thanks for applying, but we have decided to go with someone else.” No hard feelings at that point. But I began receiving job alerts and the position I applied for and was rejected from has come up several times as a “job I might be perfect for”, I even reapplied once or twice and got no response. It feels like I am being taunted by these people who are rubbing it in my face that they’d rather have the position remain eternally vacant than hire me. Could I be overreacting or could there be something more to it?

Keep in mind, I applied online for a position in a local retail store, was interviewed by someone on the other side of the country and rejected by a hiring manager who lives in another country. The whole process seemed strange to me as I’d surely expect there to be regional hiring managers in different areas of the country to make these decisions.

What is the point in getting angry? Is it going to get you the job? And why should they pick only you to taunt? Do they know you? Be realistic.

If it is any consolation, I have been working at the same employer for about 10 years, starting out as a contractor. I had to take night-shift hours in order to get hired, but it got my foot in the door and I eventually got to day-shift.
I have been trying to jump at a certain technical promotion any time the job is posted.
I have been told that some law or policy requires them to post the job to employees, even though they may already have someone in mind to fill the position.
It is frustrating and dents my self-esteem (ego) when I get the 'thanks for playing' e-mail, but I have to remember that it isn't personal and other employees have told me that I am totally qualified for the position.
All I can do is to keep my resume up to date and keep my eyes and ears open for job openings.
Best of luck to you and to your future endeavors. :D

The most frustrating thing is a lot of these interviews are fake as in you never had a shot of getting an offer and your time is being wasted. But other people don’t see it that way and merely view is as you “failing to close the deal.” A great job interview where there is little to no room for improvement, where you hit it off with the interviewer, answer all of their questions amazingly, ask them compelling, well thought out questions at the end but ultimately do not receive an offer is a lot like scoring an incredible touchdown but still losing the game. In time, the amazing touchdown is forgotten and all people remember is that your team lost.
