What types of impulsive thoughts to normal people have?

Postby anonymoussun » Sat Mar 26, 2011 3:40 am

I have been wondering if do normal people have either intrusive and or impulsive imagination or thoughts from time to time?

If so how frequent?

Would it include thoughts of like, jumping off a cliff, stealing a candy, hurting someone, hurting yourself, yelling profanity etc..?

How does one feel when thinking of impulsive thought?

I believe so, but there is a stark difference between such 'normal' people and those who have - for example - OCD. When a person with OCD has such a thought, they worry about it and feel that there's something amiss. They then worry more and more about it until it becomes an 'obsessive' thought. For the normal person, they just dismiss the thought and get on with their lives... ... I know this because my brother does not have OCD, and I ask him about such things. i have OCD diagnosed, by the way.

Take care,
Kevin

Yup, but they don't react to them in the same way.

Is there such thing as having repressed impulsive thoughts, in one's subconsciousness mind?

Well I have read this the following from a OCD forum.

My therapist and i discussed impulses. She gave me an article in which a survey was conducted on members of the public who had NO type of OCD related problems...just regular people.
80% of the people they interviewed reported they get the following thoughts or impulses:--The impulse to hurt or harm someone.
-Thoughts of intense anger toward someone related to a past experience.
-Thoughts of an accident happening to a loved one.
Impulse to say something nasty and damning to someone.
-Thoughts of harm or death of a close friend/family.
-Thoughts of act of violance during sex.
-Thoughts that something is wrong with your health.
-Impulse to physically/verbally attack someone.
-Thoughts of harm or accidents happening to children.
-Impulse to shout at and abuse someone.
-Impulse to harm or be violent towards children, especially younger ones.
-Impulse to crash the car when driving.
-Impulses to attack and violently punish someone e.g throw a child off a bus.
-Impulses to say rude things to people.
-Thoughts about accidents or mishaps before travelling.
-Impulse to push people off or away e.g in a crowded place or queue.
-Impulse to attack someone.
-Impulse to say the wrong thing at the wrong time/place.
-Impulse-sexual impulse towards females known or unknown.
-Thought that wishing someone disappeared off the face of the earth.
-Thoughts of 'un-natural' sexual acts.
-Thought,wishing or imaganing that someone close to you is hurt or harmed.
-Impulse to attack or kill someone.
-The thought you may do something dramatic like trying to rob a bank.
-Impulse to jump off a high building or mountain.
-Impulse to jump off the platform when a train is coming.

..very interesting! However, through your question, were you asking whether or not 'normal' people repress these memories? I don't believe that they do. In my view, the thought comes, they see it as ridiculous, and then they ignore it and move on.
