Wizard of Odds/Vegas.

Do "gambling writers", the Wizard of Odds/Vegas, for one, the gamblers much more harm than good?

On the one hand are the disreputable, so-called "mathematicians" who "shill out" meaningless and impractical long-run player-advantages; and on the other, the "system" scammers who, availing themselves of some the formers' own words, declare, "The math can not be overcome, (so there must be a few simple, get-rich-quick "systems" to do the job instead.)

It's my belief that mathematics, coupled with the prudish obsessions of such "regulators" to fairly apply it universally to all casinos, has inadvertently become the 21st century's basic political justification for casinos. Because also no matter how "well-oiled" the means, sometimes the ends, whichever, are just not appropriate and constructive.

If gambling didn't make casinos money, they would shut down or restructure to offer more profitable services.

If you're a gambler, you could keep trying to win against the casinos, but long-term most people won't succeed. Casino gambling is designed so that the house wins more often than the player. And nobody can escape that. If a player found some way to swing the odds in their favour, the casino would change the rules or ban the player. Casinos are not charities.

So a gambler can make money by selling advice to other players. He (or she) doesn't need to know a secret about how to win, he just has to pretend that he does. Other gamblers will listen because they are so keen to win.

In my personal opinion, the gambling writer is no better or worse than the casino. They both are trying to make money off people by pretending that it is easy to win. :(
No diagnosis, lots of opinions, and a bunch of issues that I haven't quite figured out.

Are you implying that they serve NO useful purpose, etc? I read some authoritative articles about this addiction which state that one isn't a 'pathological gambler' who can, eg, budget an affordable amount of entertainment-money to thusly gamble.

Like a "social drink", or a "cigarette to calm the nerves"?
