Set This House In Order

Postby wooster » Mon Nov 08, 2010 8:53 pm

http://www.bymattruff.com/sethouse.html (Set This House In Order, by Matt Ruff - it's a very good book, as I was told by a friend (who has it in German translation only, so I couldn't read it yet in full.)
Anyway, I found the first few chapters online:

Dusting off this old thread...

Set This House In Order, by Matt Ruff, is by far my favorite novel portraying someone who is living with DID. The author website has been redesigned and the link to the main page about this book has changed. The current link is: bymattruff.com: Set This House in Order: A Romance of Souls.

In this novel the depictions of DID, both objective and subjective, are very accurate. On his website Matt Ruff says that many readers with DID (sometimes multiple readers using the same e-mail address :D ) write to him to tell him so and thank him. This accuracy has even moved Dr. Philip Bromberg to praise the novel in one of his professional books about psychotherapy. According to Matt Ruff's website the novel is based on the real life story of a multiple in the author's social network who dated another multiple (who wasn't aware and didn't want to be aware). That is such a common situation, and so heartbreaking!

Now almost a year since my last post in this thread, this book remains the one I recommend most often, here on the DID Forum and to people I meet in real life who are dealing with DID or even just curious. I recommend it to others with DID and their significant others too.

Here is a bit of a SPOILER:

The plot in a nutshell: A guy with DID meets a girl with DID. He is co-conscious. She is not, and her main host identity is unaware of her DID. He and she activate each other, triggering much switching and losing time together, which naturally causes much confusion. Situation normal. They have adventures together and end up friends.

I really enjoyed this book as well. I downloaded it from iTunes. I am a support person, but I saw so many similarities with my partner, and many very accurate descriptions. I think something similar to what happened in the book, happened to my boyfriend regarding a destructive alter getting out and wrecking havoc. I didn't know the author had a website, so I will have to check that out.

I am definitely bumping this and adding my recommendation. This book is written so incredibly well.

Editing/adding that it can be pretty activating.

I am reading this novel for the 3rd time! I have a brand new paperback copy and I do not remember the prologue at all. Was it present in the hardback version?! The prologue gives an outline of Andy Gage's DID system history and structure.
