Any GPS Locator Ideas?

Postby Simply Monet » Mon Mar 17, 2014 7:32 pm

My husband has DID and at night some times and during the day he has ended up walking out of the house. Being surrounded by 6 acres of woods and living in the country there are many places to go and the police don't consider you missing until 24 to 48 hours here. So... does anyone know of any good ideas of any GPS locators, watches, necklaces, chips... whatever might work that isn't too expensive.

If you have any idea of something you have heard of or used can you send me the name or the website where it's located? Thanks.

About GPS tracking, I replied in your other thread: DID Forum: SO just venting needing an "its gonna be OK"; see my post titled Safety for dissociative fugue.

Contact the search and rescue groups in your area. They will coach you in what to say to the police to ensure the police treat this as the emergency situation that it is. Your husband has a medical condition. He needs to be treated like an Alzheimer's patient who has a history of dissociative fugue. This has features similar to wandering. This is a Silver Alert type situation.

The search and rescue groups can also help you study a map of your neighborhood and pre-plan the crucial initial search strategies: hasty search and containment.

Thanks Una+ for the information. I was thinking about the phone too but if anything happened and they didn't take the phone so that is why I didn't think about the phone. I was thinking of a watch or bracelet that they wouldn't hopefully take off, or need to take off.

I will be contacting them to get this information. Thank you so much.

Wearable GPS tracking devices have to be taken off regularly for recharging of the battery, and you also need some other device to monitor the tracking device. For privacy reasons, among others, the companies that make these systems typically provide the monitoring equipment only to the police, and they start monitoring the device only after the person has wandered. Again, what matters most here is that if he leaves the house during a fugue, his leaving causes others in the house to be woken up. Even better would be that the more responsible alters in his system remain aware and able to take executive control and keep him safe.

Hi Una, I wanted to thank you again for your idea. When I posted this and you responded so many things were going on and I didn't visit the site much to actually do what you said:

But I was going over my old posts and saw the above comment and said I'm going to do that while I'm thinking of it. I did it and all I could do was kick myself :) LOL, they have a program here called Project Lifesaver and you go in for an interview and they hook you up with a gps bracelet and I guess they will go over some ideas of things I can do.

So, I just wanted to thank you and let others know if they are interested to check with their local county for Project Lifesaver.

This is reliant on their phone I am afraid.
There are a number of GPS apps to help you find your phone. You enable the app via your computer and it will switch on GPS on the phone and show you where you "lost your phone" on a map.

Here is one for android but just search for "lost phone tracker" and you'll find more choices:

Great stuff about the bracelet :)

Check out this

https://www.lookout.com

It's awesome because you can sign onto your computer and know exactly where he is, by like a few yards.

You down load the app to his phone. He just has to make sure never to close the app but always keep it running.

This is on my phone. It's amazing!
