Dreaming with DID

Postby matryoshkadoll » Tue Oct 29, 2013 12:13 am

I'm hoping that you can share your experiences of having dreams (nice and unpleasant) as someone with DID...

I, the ANP, can remember a few unpleasant dreams as a child and through young adulthood I rarely dreamt at all. Over the last few years as I've become more and more co-conscious I've dreamt more. And over the last year they've become more frequent still. I understand that dreaming is a way of processing information so I guess more dreams = more healing?

With our dreams over the last 6 months, I am aware of a young part of myself talking in the dream and she is separate from me and the other parts who seem to experience it together with me (or perhaps they're not all conscious of it?). But I guess this may be that we are not in such a deep sleep whilst dreaming, just before waking.

Does anyone else dream like this, with parts experiencing it separately? Or are you whole, experiencing it as a singleton?

dreams for us always fascinate me somehow.

we get lots of nightmares (ptsd related) and we will sometimes switch during the dream, and then that person will wake up in the body (even if i'm the one going to bed), but we'll both remember the dream somewhat.
Sometimes we have our own dreams that are personalized to us (not always necessarily memory related, but includes interests, fears, hopes, dreams ect).
we've had co-conscious dreaming, 'singular' dreaming, blended dreaming, dreams that are people's who've integrated or passed away. it's such a mix. keeps things interesting long as its not nightmares.

Thanks for your message.

You have a lot of insight into your dreams and nightmares. I think I will try and write about mine as soon as I wake up in future (so long as I am fully there)... I often wake up to parts talking and upset about dreams (should say nightmares), but we don't talk about them in detail as my main focus is calming them, and grounding myself (or the other way round as I can't comfort them until I'm found the space to ground). Perhaps more is going on for them than I know.

We have a lot of nightmares, too. However, I've never been able to remember what they were about, and Michael told me once it was because the nightmares would make me remember, and they wouldn't allow that, for my own good. They switch with me when those nightmares start. As far as regular dreams go, we've experienced every kind. Sometimes I'll be watching someone else's dream, sometimes we'll switch in the middle of the dream, but we're all watching it. Twice, I've been in the middle of a regular dream when I met a new alter. With Ashley, she switched with me in the dream, rather than introducing herself outside of the body like in the inside world. But I was co-conscious with her, and the body morphed to look like her. The other time, Katie switched with me in the dream before I met her, but it was like I was outside the body watching her, and the body looked like her again. It was more like she took my place in the dream while I watched her.

I either don't have dreams or don't remember any. One of the others complains about having nightmares but I've never experienced dreaming. If I have I wasn't/am not aware. Sleep is closing my eyes & opening them feeling fresh. Maybe some of the foreign memories I've had could have been parts of dreams.

Ich such dich unter jedem Stein
Ich schlaf mit einem Messer ein
Wo bist du? Wo bist du?

For Hearts – you too seem to have a lot of insight into your dreams and nightmares. Did you always used to dream and have nightmares, or is it something that's increased with awareness of the alters?

That sounds like a nice way to meet an alter :)
