Things that annoy/irritate you as an Aspie

Postby Eclectic_Aspie » Mon May 27, 2013 8:46 am

As Aspies we've all got things that annoy or irritate, here are a few of mine:

Ticking clocks: especially when I'm trying to sleep! (as I've got extra sensitive hearing)
When I stay at my grandparents' house, they have so many clocks it's untrue, and I have to move them (much to their annoyance/irritation! - "you'd better not break that clock...it was given to me as a present by...",etc...etc!)

Grammar/spelling mistakes: no-one's perfect, and of course I make mistakes sometimes too, but internet forums are literally awash with mistakes! I had a strict private education, and mistakes weren't allowed by my English teacher, with each one being highlighted and corrected; if you made the same mistake again after correction, he would want to speak with you about it.
Contrast that with a relatively good local school, whereby after reading a neighbour's English work, noticed that a lot of the mistakes were left in! It is a 'bug bear' I have had to come to terms with, as I've learned from my Buddhist meditation (I need it!) to accept the things you can't change (and do something about the things you can!). Working as an English teacher myself has been a blessing and a curse in this respect too! I notice them subconsciously and they grate on me, with me going back to them to identify the error...maybe I should be a proofreader!
Primary examples are "your" instead of "you're" and problems with "their", "there" and "they're"....I know English is a pain sometimes, but it's not that difficult! (especially for a native English speaker - in fact, many foreigners I have taught have a better command of English grammar!)

Loud, drunk people (and often with low intelligence) are the next....people of low intellect often keep quiet, adhering to the old proverb: "it's better to keep your mouth shut and appear stupid , than to open it and remove all doubt!" - this is especially true with these people when drunk!
I have sensory issues already, and my extra sensitive hearing doesn't appreciate this type of behaviour (particularly when coupled with poor grammar!)

Smells: especially body odour and people smelling like walking ash trays; I also have an extra sensitive sense of smell, and overpowering smells like these knock me sick and disgust me. One thing that I've also noticed is that I can smell the hormones of a woman when she's on her period (in a relatively confined space), and that can get uncomfortable too, for example on public transport (which I have a problem with using anyway), or in a lift, etc.

They're some of my 'pet peeves', what are yours?

Hi shock_the_monkey,

Thanks for your list, one item of which reminds me of one of my other annoyances: being overly hot.

Just a hot temperature is bad enough, but when combined with a very high humidity, this is when misey and a meltdown is 'just around the corner' for me.

A few years ago, I lived abroad in a place where the temperature in summer was in the high 30s Celcius and the humidity 80-90%+

The high humidity exacerbates the situation much more, because at that sort of humidity level, the body's cooling system shuts down, as your pores become blocked and you can no longer sweat effectively in order to cool down, thus heightening the feeling of overheating.....not a good combination at all!

I hate having people other than myself and my fiance in my home.
Car sounds scare me. A car revving always make my pulse and adrenaline go crazy.
I hate grammar/spelling mistakes. I'm not an expert either, especially as this isn't my native language, but I can't help but be incredibly annoyed when people use your/you're and their/there then/than etc wrong.
Things in movies that are not logical. If I don't find them logical I can't stop complaining and pointing it out, which my fiance hates.
I hate being hot and sweaty. Even in my country that's not very warm I still get too hot. 20 degrees celsius is more than enough for me.
Extreme sunlight. I constantly have to squint and/or look down. I simply can't see properly.

I'm sure I can list a thousand more things, but I'll stop here.

I think the more I know of a thing the more it upsets me in a movie or TV show.

Ex Greys Anatomy. Only the ugly people wear masks in surgery ... and they break sterile technique all the time. The show is soooooooooo filled with flaws that I make comments and it used to upset my ex wife.

I am more likely to believe in Gandalf than in that show.

The other is bad bad fight scenes or terrible martial arts in movies. It is not really that hard to hire a professional to direct the fight scene and make it realistic but soooooo often they do things that are unrealistic ...

not including a front roll to get away from gun fire? I mean WTH ?

Thanks for your replies Demona and Rolling Panda,

Strong sunlight is also uncomfortable to me, more so since I lost my (expensive!) sunglasses while out walking in the countryside a week or so ago! (I'm currently in the process of buying a new pair, but with my very specific preferences, it's been difficult to find a pair I like! - my old ones apparently made me look 'dodgy', so I'm looking for a more friendly-looking pair now, and some Prada Sport glasses have caught my eye...after the usual 'many hours of research'!)

Inconsistent or illogical films or TV shows bother me too, and I've always made out-loud comments in a home environment about them (which I thought was 'normal', as it was commonplace in my original family home, but I now understand that it could/would be annoying to many NTs).

As a long-time practitioner of martial arts myself, most films are quite literally a joke when it comes to realism, including James Bond, et al.

One of the more realistic films I've seen lately is 'Parker' with Jason Statham, his character in the film really does come across as an expert in hand-to-hand combat and with weapons: have you seen that film and what do you think? I know it only got about 6.1/10 on IMDB (my movie bible), but I enjoyed it ;)

Also: loose lose !!! :!:

(I know it's silly and everybody makes mistakes, but I can't help it. It always annoys me.)

What about that scene when Sherlock "figures out" (oookay...) the most ultra-top-secret password in the world, and it's... maggie?!! Known word/name, six characters, all lowercase, no numbers or symbols. Why didn't they make it so that he would figure out where the password would have been written by someone (stupid thing to do and obviously against the rules for any important password, but people do it in the real world). I'll never be able to forgive the authors for that one.

Humanity.

On a more serious note, it would take me forever to list the things that irritate me. Arrogance, condescension, and stupidity are at the top of the list.

The implied qualifier is probably "tendency" if not otherwise stated...
I don't generalise in the classic sense...
My default MO is to think in terms of probabilities/improbabilities...

I may not have Aspergers, but my cousin does have AS and I asked him what irritates him. He said grammar/spelling mistakes, bad smells and high pitched noises. He also said he finds religion and spirituality irritating to an extent. He didn't give me a very detailed description. :)
Borderline personality disorder and mood disorder NOS.
