Postby shock_the_monkey » Mon May 13, 2013 5:05 am

i had cause to bring this to mind a few weeks ago when i was having a few relationship problems of my own. and tonight i was spring cleaning my desktop when i chanced upon them again. so. here are the lyrics to the theme music of the TV series 'the flashing blade' ...

You've got to fight for what you want
For all that you believe
It's right to fight for what we want
To live the way we please

As long as we have done our best
Then no one can do more
And life and love and happiness
Are well worth fighting for

And we should never count the cost
Or worry that we'll fall
It's better to have fought and lost
Than not have fought at all

Let's always take whatever comes
And never try to hide
Face everything and anyone
Together side by side

... in many ways these lyrics encapsulate my view of life. to what extent they informed that view is more difficult to say. nevertheless, in my personal fight for truth, justice and freedom, this has been my mantra.

i've entitled this thread 'lyrics ...' because it strikes me that it might be a good place for others to also post those lyrics that are meaningful to them and say why.
something knocked me out' the trees
now i'm on my knees
... don't you know you're gonna shock the monkey

there is one thing you must be sure of
i can't take any more
... don't you know you're gonna shock the monkey

don't like it but i guess i'm learning

... shock the monkey to life

it's about a bit more than just love in the 'amore' sense of the word, as this abstract from the link i posted makes clear ...

The UK version of The Flashing Blade was a twelve part adventure drama centering around the war between France and Spain. It was set at a place called Casal during the year of 1630 and a Castle on the border between France and Spain is under siege from Spanish forces. Two Frenchmen (the heroes of the story) with a wicked sense of humour appear and make merry hell for the Spaniards. Francois de Chevalier and his servant Guillot are the story's main characters. The Spanish hear of a possible truce between France and Spain but some of the Spanish elite do not want a truce until the fort of Casal is taken. Hence they begin a bombardment of the battlements and try everything they can to prevent any form of truce being signed.

Interestingly, When reading the lyrics (I'd never heard before now) I didn't even think about it being for lovers at all, I was just thinking it meant in general terms. It's a good one, Shock :)

I've always been into lyrics. I used to type up lyrics to songs all the time. By "type" I mean on a typewriter, and there was no internet to just look up lyrics on, so I would take my tape player and just play songs and rewind however much I needed to to get the lyrics right.

Incidentally, your signature makes the song "Shock the Monkey" run through my head all the time!

Lyrics that I like? I have so many it's hard to choose. The Eagles have excellent lyrics in their songs. Although sometimes I think I actually enjoyed lyrics even more when I was younger and didn't know to not take everything literally, when Hotel California was an actual hotel in the middle of a desert and some monster lived there keeping everyone captive LOL

I'm glad I'm not the only one who didn't see 'lovers' in the song meanings.

Personally, I immediately started thinking about everything in life being applied by this. It could be the type of job one has, what people do in their free time, health, etc. Kinda the last thing that came to mind was 'lovers'.

Thinking about it though, it applies to love as much as anything else, though. Love, after all, is something many people seem to require to be 'happy'. All of our goals tend to revolve around being happy.

I do like the lyrics, though. I should look up the song on youtube to actually listen to it.

I usually listen to older stuff, but There are two songs in the last decade that really stood out to me when I first heard them. The first one is more general, and could easily have written by an aspie:

"No Such Thing", by John Mayer
"Welcome to the real world", she said to me
Condescendingly
Take a seat
Take your life
Plot it out in black and white
Well I never lived the dreams of the prom kings
And the drama queens
I'd like to think the best of me
Is still hiding
Up my sleeve

They love to tell you
Stay inside the lines
But something's better
On the other side

I wanna run through the halls of my high school
I wanna scream at the
Top of my lungs
I just found out there's no such thing as the real world
Just a lie you've got to rise above

So the good boys and girls take the so called right track
Faded white hats
Grabbing credits
Maybe transfers
They read all the books but they can't find the answers
And all of our parents
They're getting older
I wonder if they've wished for anything better
While in their memories
Tiny tragedies

They love to tell you
Stay inside the lines
But something's better
On the other side

And the other one, described so perfectly how I felt especially at that time, I could have written it myself if I'd had the talent (which I don't lol)

Unwell, by Matchbox 20
All day staring at the ceiling
Making friends with shadows on my wall
All night hearing voices telling me
That I should get some sleep
Because tomorrow might be good for something

Hold on
Feeling like Im headed for a breakdown
And I don't know why

[chorus]
But Im not crazy, Im just a little unwell
I know right now you can't tell
But stay awhile and maybe then you'll see
A different side of me
Im not crazy, Im just a little impaired
I know right now you don't care
But soon enough you're gonna think of me
And how I used to be...me

Im talking to myself in public
Dodging glances on the train
And I know, I know they've all been talking about me
I can hear them whisper
And it makes me think there must be something wrong with me
Out of all the hours thinking
Somehow Ive lost my mind

[chorus]

Ive been talking in my sleep
Pretty soon they'll come to get me
Yeah, they're taking me away

[chorus]

Yeah, how I used to be
How I used to be
Well, Im just a little unwell
How I used to be
How I used to be
Im just a little unwell

in a similar vein, possibly ...

Helen Reddy - Angie Baby

You live your life in the songs you hear
On the rock and roll radio
And when a young girl doesn't have any friends
That's a really nice place to go
Folks hoping you'd turn out cool
But they had to take you outta school
You're a little touched you know, Angie Baby

Lovers appear in your room each night
And they whirl you across the floor
But they always seem to fade away
When your daddy taps on your door
Angie girl, are you all right
Tell the radio good-night
All alone once more, Angie Baby

Angie Baby, you're a special lady
Living in a world of make-believe
Well, maybe

Stopping at her house is a neighbor boy
With evil on his mind
'Cause he's been peeking in Angie's room
At night through her window blind
I see your folks have gone away
Would you dance with me today
I'll show you how to have a good time, Angie Baby

When he walks in her room,
He feels confused like he's walked into a play
And the music's so loud it spins him around
'Til his soul has lost its way
And as she turns the volume down
He's getting smaller with the sound
It seems to pull him off the ground
Toward the radio he's bound never to be found

The headlines read that a boy disappeared
and everyone thinks he died
'Cept a crazy girl with a secret lover
Who keeps her satisfied
It's so nice to be insane
No one asks you to explain
Radio by your side, Angie Baby

Angie Baby, you're a special lady
Living in a world of make-believe
Well, maybe
Well, maybe

Well baby, there you stand
With your little head down in your hand
Oh my God, you can't believe
It's happening again
Your baby's gone and you're all alone
And it looks like the end

You're back out on the street
And you're tryin' to remember
How will you start it over?
You don't know what became
You don't care much for a stranger's touch
But you can't hold your man

You never thought you'd be alone
This far down the line
And I know what's been on your mind
You're afraid it's all been wasted time

The autumn leaves have got you thinking
About the first time that you fell
You didn't love the boy too much, no, no
You just loved the boy too well, farewell

So you live from day to day
And you dream about tomorrow
And the hours go by like minutes
And the shadows come to stay
So you take a little something
To make them go away

And I could have done so many things, baby
If I could only stop my mind
From wonderin' what I left behind
And from worrying 'bout this wasted time

Another love has come and gone
And the years keep rushing on
I remember what you told me
Before you went out on your own
"Sometimes to keep it together
We got to leave it alone"

So you can get on with your search, baby
And I can get on with mine
And maybe someday we will find
That it wasn't really wasted time

... story of my life, really!
something knocked me out' the trees
now i'm on my knees
... don't you know you're gonna shock the monkey

there is one thing you must be sure of
i can't take any more

This is from one of my favorite bands, Alabama 3 (AKA "A3" here in the states)

Speed of the Sound of Loneliness

I come home late, I come home early
come home big when I'm feelin small
come home straight or come home f**'d up
sometimes I don't come home at all

what in the world has come over me?
what in heaven's name have I done?
I've broken the speed of the sound of loneliness
I'm out there runnin' just to be on the run

you've got a heart that burns and a fever
you've got a worried and a jealous mind
so how can a love that lasts forever
leave me so damn far behind?

tell me now,
what in the world has come over me?
what in heaven's name have I done?
I've broken the speed of the sound of loneliness
I'm out there runnin' just to be on the run

it's a'mighty mean and a dreadful sorrow
crossed that evil line today
I can't think about tomorrow
you see, I ain't got one word to say

so tell me now,
what in the world has come over me?
what in heaven's name have I done?
I've broken the speed of the sound of loneliness
I'm out there runnin' just to be on the run

just to be on the run
just to be on the run
Lord above, I'm
out there runnin' just to be on the run
Everyone is a genius. But if you judge a fish on it's ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing it is stupid. ~Albert Einstein
