It is a big tub like thing, but it can be closed completely-hence, Pod. It is filled with water and 1,200 pounds of magnesium sulfate (which is essential to our bodies, but which most people don't get enough of). The Epsom salt allows you to float effortlessly on the water.
The pod closes completely so that you can block out all visual stimulus, it becomes utterly and completely dark. That alone was soothing, to keep my eyes open, without a single thing going into my brain visually. There are soft color changing lights you can turn off if you don't like the dark.
There is soothing music the first ten minutes your are floating to get you relaxed and then that turns off too, so there is only the sound of the water if you move, but if you stay still the water will become still.
The water is body tempeture, and the salt keeps you floating, so your body can completely relax. Where I went it was an hour long floating session, it took me a little awhile to relax comfortable, but eventually I did. They said this is normal the first time. It was very relaxing to just lay there will almost no outside stimulus.
If there is a place like this around you, you should definitely try it at least once. I think this would be a great therapy with regular use for all levels of autism, though obviously the more severe autism would need a little more assistance.
