What Should I Tell Teachers About AS?

Postby AspieMe » Fri Nov 30, 2012 8:46 pm

I will be taking college courses that last five weeks. So every five weeks I will have a new teacher that I will need to email and explain some issues that I may have in their class regarding Asperger's Syndrome.

What should I tell them? How much do I disclose?

I'm not sure why you need to do that, do they have accommodations for people with certain conditions that you could take advantage of? If the class expectations are the same for everyone regardless, then I wouldn't even mention it at all. But if there's something that they will be lenient about because of your AS then you'd want to claim that. But I would only mention whatever I needed to in order to obtain whatever accommodations they allow.
I hope that made sense :?

I'm still in the process of getting a professional diagnosis, I just found insurance that I can afford, and as soon as that starts I will continue with a psychologist. I couldn't afford it without insurance anymore.

Without a diagnosis, they will not make accommodations. I have found that when I tell my teachers what I have, they will be a little more lenient in regards to anxiety and such and more thorough on what is expected of me. I think I need to be more clear about my issues though, instead of just what I have. But I don't know what to tell them.

OK. I think I would say something like "I believe I have aspergers and am being assessed for it now. I hope that it will not affect my ability to succeed in your class but it could potentially cause some difficulties for me. If or when such difficulties arise, I will let you know, and hopefully we can arrange something that would work for both of us."

Would something along those lines work?
