Eli Roth Diagnosed as Part Time Psycho

Postby kristal » Tue Nov 08, 2011 10:06 am

Is there such a thing as "part time psychopath?" I think there is. Very interesting indeed.

Discovery posted an extended clip of Eli’s conversation about his brain scan from Curiosity. The clip also dives deeper into Eli’s “part time psychopath” diagnosis with Dr. Fallon.

Watch the clip here : http://eli-roth.org/

I admire Eli Roth and his work and I think it's very fortunate to be able to state your dark fantasies, make them real in a form of art and still function highly in society. Its bliss IMO.

I watched the clip and it was interesting, but I'm not sure I believe in the whole idea of someone being a part time psychopath. Desensitization to violence would be a more likely explanation for why he lacked empathy while watching violent or 'disturbing' images. I say that because he apparently showed empathy with other more 'pleasant' images.
There's more to being a psychopath than just lacking empathy and having certain genes that contribute to aggression. Who's to say those images wouldn't cause empathy, guilt and remorse (depending on the situation) if he was actively involved in what he was seeing.

^Which is pretty much why he was called a part time psychopath.
His brain, at that time, mirrored that of a psychopath's.

Let me go to hell, that's all I ask, and go on cursing them there, and them look down and hear me, that might take some of the shine off their bliss.

Is it not also possible that someone who is desensitized to violence and therefore, lacks empathy towards violent or 'disturbing' images would also display a similar brain pattern?
I hardly think that would make him a psychopath. And let's not forget there is a difference between looking at violent images and experiencing them. It's quite possible that the physical experience could cause a different set of brain patterns altogether.

inquity -- its very interesting indeed. Moreover, this man makes violent movies, so it could be that he's keeping his violent fantasies and express it on the big screen in a form of art?
Wouldn't that be another alternative form of release?

Yes, I imagine it is, but he's not actually participating in any violent activity himself. The only violent activity he's involved in is all acting. I personally believe that the only way to determine if someone is truly a psychopath or even a 'part-time' psychopath (which I personally think is a load of bullshlt) would be to study someone who has experienced real violence. Looking at violent images and acting out violent scenes is nothing compared to the real thing.

I looked at an interview of him.
Could not get the link you are referring to in the OP.

He reminds me a lot of a friend I had. He was no psychopath, just someone that liked to look tough and try to make friend with people that were tough. He also liked to elicit reactions, and it seemed clear in the interview that it is his case as well. It is like knowing something is bad and talking about it to upset others. He was a real coward underneath all that.

PS: Those are not even his own fantasies, as he says. They are just stories he gleams here and there in history.
It is better to be the widow of a hero than the wife of a coward.
