Yoga will help

Postby SoftSoul » Mon Jan 22, 2007 6:21 am

Hi, I'm a 30 yr old female from Bangalore, India. I've been suffering from Anxiety attacks for the past six years. But for the past 2 months it has become permanent.

I've been through all those familar feelings of an impending heart attack, a sense of unreliasation etc.

I started Yoga a month ago and would like to share with everyone out here, it's benefits. Yoga, especially when combined with Pranayam (breathing) has calmed me down a bit. I still expeience my attcaks with a vengeance but I feel I can control them better now that I know they are only anxiety attacks.

I was prescribed Nexito and Lonozip but have not aken them for the past four days. I do get a tingling and numbeness in my head bit I'm stronger mentally and ready to face an attack head on.

I'm here if anyone would like to chat or discuss their anxiety moments as I;'m sure I would reach out to someone out here the next time that horrible feeling comes on.

Until then, remember to breath correctly and deep :-)

Yoga is a way of life, an art of righteous living or an integrated system for the benefit of the body, mind and inner spirit. This art originated, was perfected and practiced in India thousands of years ago. The references to yoga are available in 'Upanishads' and 'Puranas' composed by Indian Aryans in the later Vedic and post- Vedic period. The main credit for systematizing yoga goes to Patanjali who wrote 'Yoga Sutra', two thousand Years ago. He described the principles of the full eight fold yogic discipline. He composed the treatise in brief code words known as 'Sutras'. 'Yoga Sutra' is the most important basic text on Yoga. It is through this basic treatise that the essential message of yoga spread throughout the world.

Yoga is so much more than just physical exercise, though. The key to getting the best out of each pose is to focus not only on your body, but also on your mind and breathing. It stimulates the thyroid gland, pituitary gland and digestive system. It increase flexibility and improves muscle tone. It stimulates the immune system.

Have to be careful making false associations with a thing's seeming benefits while ignoring other factors. For most Indian Yoga practioners, the benefit comes more from the way they live overall than the fact they practice Yoga. Just as diet varies from person to person in how it benefits them or not, simply taking up Yoga (or for non-Hinduism religious peoples a yoga-like practice since Yoga is part of Hinduism and may be forbidden by their particular religion (Judaism/Christianity et al.)) may not yield the same benefits it does others.

Yoga will NOT cure disease short of those that are psychologically brought on in the first place. But again it isn't the Yoga itself as much as the resulting relaxtion and destressing of the body.

No shortage of phoney cure-alls in India selling their culture as miraculous snake oils to gullible desperate people in the West. Yoga is beneficial, but you'd get the same benefit following any similar stretching/tai-chi/exercise regime.
