Teeth flossing?

Postby Cords85 » Sat Jan 21, 2017 8:27 am

Hey, I've have trich since the age of about 11, I'm not 31 and I didn't even know it had a name until I was about 25! I knew of another girl in my tutor group at school who had it too and we would often confide in each other about it.
I only pull the hair on my head, I'm always looking for wirey ones and I'll usually pull in an area that itches to relieve the itch. I go on trich binges sometimes in front of the telly and just pull and pull and pull. I've heard of people eating the hair or the root before, but does anyone floss their teeth with it?
I've done it since I started and find it oddly satisfying. I know it's not a good thing, it's usually triggered by uncomfortable situations or if I'm watching a gripping/thrilling tv show or film.
Mostly I just want to know if others have experienced the teeth flossing thing as I've never seen anyone write about it. I've gone a full two weeks now without pulling my hair out!! I am now consciously trying to stop myself from doing it. I don't think we will ever be free of the so called 'habit'. I think I will always have to remain conscious of it. Has anyone ever beaten it before? I so want to.

Hi Cords , and welcome to the forum !

As you can see , it's not super-active . :(

But I did want to welcome you and say that it's great that you haven't pulled for 2 weeks ! I think we can overcome our impulses . We may always have the urge to do it but knowing what our triggers are is a good first step to controlling them .

For me , it's the urge to gamble . When it hits me , I try to "talk it out " with myself :

I really want to do it .
Why ?
Because I'm stressed out .
Will it make me less stressed ?
Maybe for a moment .
Will I feel bad afterwards ?
Yes , I'll feel awful .
Is there something else I can do for the stress instead ?
Well , I could ______ .....

Anyway , that helped me when I was trying to fight off my urges .

Hi, thanks for your reply. I've noticed it's not super active.. I guess I was looking for like minded people who would be able to offer some advice for overcoming it.
You sound like you have your head screwed on!
Thank you for your message and I will go through that thought process next time I have the urge to pull.

Don't let that stop you from checking in here if you're stressed or need some support . I'll always answer !

Impulses / compulsions are maddening . I felt like I was constantly fighting my own brain and it was exhausting . Part of my mind kept droning on about how it's just easier to give in and do it .

For me , even though it seemed like I was dealing with a toddler tantrum in my brain , the more I denied the impulse , the weaker it got . It took months of battle ( it was not pleasant ) , but eventually the urges became fewer and farther between .

These days , they might come around when I'm stressed out , but they are more like "ghost thoughts" . Keep fighting !

Hi, Cords. A lot of what you said sounds familiar.

Yes to head hair, yes to wiry hairs, yes to itchy spots.

And yes to flossing. I've only done it a handful of times, since my teeth are really tight together and most hairs can't make it very far before breaking, but if it weren't for that physical limitation I'd probably find myself doing it more.
