Trichothilomania is named OCD since 2015?

Postby Trichmale1979 » Sun Jul 19, 2015 4:11 am

Trichotillomania (hair-pulling disorder) moved from "impulse-control disorders not elsewhere classified" in DSM-IV, to an obsessive-compulsive disorder in DSM-5.[2]
What is the difference ?

I thought it had changed from OCD to impulse control, not the other way around. Or have they changed it back again?

It looks like they changed back . Actually, doctors still don't know real reason or treatment till now .severe trichothilomania is impossible to treat at all . Message to pull comes from brain in stressful and non stressful situations . So no one knows real reason . They blame it on genetics .

Sometimes I have OCD where I need to pull the hair out but it doesn't happen to everyone with Trichotillomania.
I heard Dematillomania's named changed to Excoriation Disorder.

I see this is a couple of months old, but figured I'd add in my two cents :)
It isn't totally surprising, especially when I think about my own experience.
Every morning before showering, I examine my lashes & check the alignment and length, I pull those that are out of place or longer than the rest. I also pull lashes that hang down and any loose hairs. Any stray eyebrow hairs get pulled as well. Hair-pulling not done in front of a mirror, I need to do "evenly"-if I pull a hair from one side, the other side needs a hair pulled as well. I am self-conscious about my hair-pulling, and will check my lashes frequently, trying to reassure myself that it's not that bad. A bit more TMI, but I'm also concerned with keeping my nipples hair-free, and will spend significant time examining & pulling them out. Some become ingrown, and I will dig until the hair is free and pulled. This has caused many scabs and scarring around the nipple area.
The major difference though, between my behavior and OCD, is that my rituals are not based in fear (I don't think harm will come to me or someone else if I don't get a hair pulled), but I do find that I cannot continue with getting ready to shower until I've pulled all the "wrong" hairs---even if I am short on time. I'm guessing this difference is why there's a specific name and not simply OCD.
