Talking to a New Doctor OBGYN

Postby YoungNBald » Sun Nov 02, 2014 1:06 am

I eat my hair. It's hard to even type that. I've pulled & eaten my hair since I was in middle school. I stopped asking myself why a long time ago. Mostly I eat the roots, but I eat enough hair to worry about physical problems. Every time Im the least bit constipated (sorry for over-share) Im terrified I'll end up in the hospital.

My husband is the only person I have ever told. Others have seen the baldness, someone did ask me once, but I have never told anyone but him the truth. But I dont think that will continue much longer.

We're talking about starting a family. I cant keep eating hair while Im pregnant... Not that I have proof but I know it cant be good. And I know I will have to talk to my doctor about it.

Im going to start seeing a new OBGYN, and Im terrified of telling her, especially if I cant find someone who specializes in mothers with control disorders like this.

"Well Doc, there's a history of diabetes in our families, I dont smoke, but I do eat my hair. Daily. Often."

I'd appreciate any advice that's out there.
Thanks,

On the up side. It's a great way to filter for open mindedness. If the new obgyn reacts well to being told that. [And if they don't, fire them and get a new one anyway!] Then that suggests you'll be able to be open with each other about other issues that come up. And that's a very positive outcome both for the two of you. And for a pregnancy.

Is there an intermediate person that you have been thinking about telling? Someone that you trust but who doesn't know yet? Because that milestone of "someone else knowing" is a big one. And it might be a little easier to get through with a stranger. If you've "practiced" it beforehand. So that it's not just your husband who knows. I appreciate that might be a very big deal too. Just an idea, I'm no expert or professional or anything.

One other idea is around finding a therapist to support you in stopping while pregnant. Finding one with trich experience might be easier than the obgyn. And they'd hopefully have more direct ideas about dealing with it. Whereas the obgyn might say whether or not they felt it could be an issue. But probably not much more than that.

More than cleverness, we need kindness and gentleness.

Does any one know if there is a way to search for an OB with previous patients with Impulse Control problems?
