Could Someone Help Please

Postby hepcat » Sun Jun 04, 2006 9:08 pm

Hi,
This is rather embarrassing to tell anyone but i think i may have developed tourette's syndrome.
I am 16 years old and this year i seem to be swearing out loud uncontrollably, it is quite depressing and people started looking at me funnily but i just try and turn it into a joke but usually i just go red.
Anyway i have managed to partially control my swearing and am able to just let it all out in a secluded area. But other times i just swear and well it's really depressing me.
I havent told anyone about this but i was just wondering what someone/anyone thinks i should do.
This problem has led to self harm but i don't really want everyone to know that.
Please could someone give me advice other than whats on websites.
Thank you,

I am very sorry.
I do not suffer this myself, but have been researching it. You say you are 16 years old? Your parents have not found anything out yet? I think you should talk it over with your family. Try and tell them what you are going through. Or even maybe the school nurse if you do not want your parents involved. If you are out of school for the summertime, maybe there is an out reach program you can get involved in.

Does thsi effect your entire social life?
Do you find yourself a lone quite abit...and maybe hide because you are afraid you will make yourself a scene?

Theres nothing funny about this at all...and Im sorry you fhave to make yourself appear a joke. This could get worse ebfore it gets any better. You really need to talk to someone, or see your family doctor. maybe there are meds that can help before it starts to take its toll.
Becuse something else could be causing this other the TS.

ANOTHER QUESTION...DO YOU HAVE TICS OTHER THEN SWEARING? Such as motor movments...or uncontroled thoughts? tHERE ARE NOT JUST ONE FORM OF ts, AND SOME PEOPLE ONLY HAVE SWEARING TICS WHILE OTHERS HAVE MUCH MORE. bUT IT MAY BE MORE OF A DEEP ROOTED ISSUE. (sorry about the caps my keyboard is kinda screwed up)

Please get back...and post a little more about what you go through each day. Such as mood swings, thoughs, eating behaviours, ect.
It will help in finding out what you really are experincing.
Build me up.....knock me down...watch me fall laugh at my bleeding spirit

Hey thanks for the response really appriciate it.
In answears to your questions i have not told anyone especially my parents as i dont want to worry them if it turns out to be nothing.

With my social life it depends who i'm with; if i'm with adults then i kind of keep it to my self but kinda automatically and carefully select my words and kinda hold in my swearing till after, i let it out by cursing a bit and then this kind of hysterical weird laugh follows but i don't know why but after i feel relived and normal again if you get me.
When i'm with friends they don't notice it simply because everyone else does it.

I did go and see my doctor today but he knew nothing about tourettes and told me that if i had it i would have swore several times and be showing signs from an earlier age. He didn't even know there were different levels of tourettes like mild, medium and extreme.

With things such as motor ticks and that erm i clear my throat quite alot which i didnt realise i did till somebody told me it was annoyin them so i've had to control that too.

I do go through quite a few mood swings like the other day i got a new car and was so happy with it (sounds like i'm bragging but i'm not, much) and then later that day i got so depressed about nothing.

With the cursing though it is usually when people are around or when im watching TV that i am desperate to curse. My cursing kinda goes like this:
"Yer so a was watchin fu****g that game last night and that d*** droppin the ball." thats wat ad say if young people were around but adults it would go something like:
"Yer so i (pause)watched that (pause) game last nite that (pause) dude kept droppin the dam ball"
It kinda sounds like my normal voice when i do it but thats because i have managed to control it abit.
With the fustration thing though it's kind of a knock on effect as like i hold it in the swearing and then it gets me worked up and fustrated which makes me want to curs even more and then well am sure you get the idea.

As for thoughts well i don't really understand how you mean with it.

Never tried drawing what i feel as i wudnt no how to lol

Thanks for your help and i hope this helps you.

there's nothing to hide

Postby alabaster » Thu Jul 13, 2006 3:35 am

you may just be very angry. try getting into therapy.
(if tourettes were a physiological problem, then why are you swearing when you could be saying anything else?)

try writing also. there's a good chance that you may be harboring a lot of anger that you have been hiding for awhile. Try to get that anger out. (responsibly, of course) Think about what is making you so mad that you cannot hold it in anymore. It's probably not as absurd as you think. If it's there, it's there for a good reason. If you're afraid of people finding out that you are mad then that would explain why you are hiding your symptoms and get depressed when you can't validate your anger.

I hope this helps even though it's speculative at best. (but i've been through this myself)

Yeah it could be tourettes. I havnt been officialy diagnosed but I do have it. I also went to the docs and she made me cry because she had no clue and I had to say everything I do and she was clueless. You should see a neurologist at a hospital. I dont know if you have to get your doctor to arrange this or not but they will know more. I need to make an appointment too but the experience at the doctor has put me off. It does sound like you have it. Does it feel like you will explode if you dont swear or clear your throut?

In response to a few things you said that your doctor told you: Tourettes can start at any age even though it is more common in the younger generation. Also, i now it is neurological and what not but....sub-conchesly you can supress the tics.....so that would explain why you didn't have more in the doctors visit.
