If I had a therapist

Postby Parador » Tue Aug 04, 2009 11:55 pm

The thought just popped into my head. I have so much time to get those popped thoughts now that I'm not working. So what would it be like? I would be sitting there and thinking that this person hears sad whiney shiiit all the time and can't possibly give a flying fukk about me or my probelms. I would brobably say it to him. Becuase he's an idiot.
Smoke me a kipper, I'll be back for breakfast.

I like the fact you've such a low regard for your imaginary therapist that you would call him an idiot.
I've never been to therapy. From what I've seen here and speaking to people who have seen them, most dislike their therapist.

I did have some therapists I didn't want when I was locked up in the psych hospital. I didn't really have a choice but to talk to them. After a while I learned how to talk without saying much. Then I learned to just say the past is in the past. That covered lots of questions. I remember reading my chart once and saw a shrink write how "the patient is exceptionally difficult to interview." That was funny.

My own limited experience with therapists has all been good and I'd be inclined to say they do care at least a little, or there's other less stressful jobs they could be off doing. And even if they don't care - what does it matter? They're not their to be your friend - they are there to help you get better. You should feel comfortable talking to them of course but I think it helps me in a way to think that they're being paid to sit there and listen to me. I don't have to feel guilty about making somebody listen to my whining because that's the job they've chosen to do.
We should be thankful we don't have a disorder as resistant to therapy as say bordeline and do whatever we can to change. However small those steps might be.

Yea, I agree with avoid. I'm paying out money, like any other service, I expect it to serve a purpose for me. I've had bad therapists (ones whom I believe were probably crazier than me), mediocre ones who gave me nothing but a feeling of emptiness, and I've had excellent ones. The excellent ones are those who are truly good at their profession and dedicated to helping people, and also give me sound and fundamental medical advice, insight, and coping mechanisms that I employ to this day, in order to lead a happier and more productive life. If a person has had nothing but negative experiences associated with therapy, then I suppose they wouldn't believe it to be useful. With the good therapy I've had, I have been able to form a warm and compassionate patient/therapist bond with them, and I do believe they truly care about my welfare, if merely for the reason that they have medical ethics as a motivation for that, and that's enough of a reason for me to believe in them.

This is quite frequent. Sometimes a patient is so afraid to discover what is in his/her inner that s(he) build a strong wall that any therapist can help him to destroy.
In other ocassions, the patient lies to avoid some shameful event or because he doesn´t want to recognise that he is not putting enough effort in the therapy.
I have had many times the temptation to do this as a patient but I have thought this is good for me? Really I want to lie myself?

I know that if you go to a therapist and you´ll get trusting in him/her, you´ll do it ok.
Note: Look for a male therapist, don´t gonna be that.....

I agree with everything you say, crappy therapists are a waste of time and money. This piece I quoted is the most important bit. There are good therapists out there, although it can take a lot of effort to find. You have to waste an hour with each bad one until you find one worthwhile.

To respond to the original post, obviously no therapist is going to "give a flying fukk" about you in the way you want. A good therapist will have a positive professional concern for your well being, but it's nothing whatsoever like having a best friend you can call anytime day or night.
With that said, therapy can be useful as long as you're not in a crisis. (and if you are, you should go to a hospital where a team of psychologists available around the clock will give the closest thing you can get) Therapy can't fix any problem quickly, it's only useful as a long-term investment in the rest of your life. If you're patient enough, and view it as a tool rather than a solution, it's worth it.
