New to therapy - initial sessions lack direction

Postby EasyToAssemble » Sat Apr 22, 2017 3:46 pm

Hello All,

I'm new to therapy and have started taking sessions over the last few months, mainly for Anxiety / Social-Anxiety, and Stress issues. I'm in the stage of wondering if my therapist (or their approach) is right for me as I haven't been given a clear idea of what future sessions will involve, long-term. I've attended about 5 sessions now, and apart from covering lifestyle changes such as breathing techniques, hydration, and sleep remedies, there has been no real work started on the actual issues at hand or been given an indication where we might head soon. Is that normal practice? Does the therapist need to spend time gathering notes before they can start the process?

At present I'm wondering if I'm being impatient, or whether I should expect my therapist to offer a clear idea of where we will end up in the next few months.

My therapist is affiliated with The *mod edit* and I was wondering if anyone else has had experience with therapists using this system / approach.
Independent client testimonies of this system also appear to be somewhat scarce, so I'm wondering if I need to "shop around" to find a better fit.

You should definitely be upfront with your therapist, there is no point going if you don't feel like there is any direction or long term gain from them! Tell him/her what you are hoping to get out of these sessions and ask them for a clearer idea of where the sessions are heading, I'm sure they will be more than happy to provide you with it but in order for you to get the most out of your sessions you should definitely talk to them about what you want!
