been told psychoanalysis would be 'too disruptive'

Postby andie_withanie » Thu Nov 03, 2016 11:25 am

background: I've been referred for psychoanalysis on the NHS, after three assessment sessions I was told that psychoanalysis would not be the right course of action as it would mean i wouldn't be able to complete my degree (i'm a mature student having to sit out a year). instead i should complete my degree first (w/appropriate support)

tbh i'm not sure what this means. i'm guessing it's just something they tell snowflakes to make them feel listened to, but part of me thinks 'holy $#%^ am i so crazy that psychoanalysis would likely destroy me?!'.

I guess i'm looking for reassurance that it's the former (or perhaps that it's the latter!). any thoughts?

I receive psychoanalysis in London, almost certainly the same place you was referred too. If I understand your question correctly. Your answer depends on how regular your appointments would be, generally psychoanalysis is a daily thing, not giving you much time to study, however like me, you can be offered weekly appoints which in that case I can't see too much of an issue.. But if you're currently sitting out a year(?) then it's even harder to see an issue. unless they are thinking ahead and your therapy is expected to go on far longer that just a year which it likely is. That's all I can think of

Generally I feel as if everyone puts education before stability which I don't see as logical thing at all, how can you be expected to be a student mental health isn't considered.

I totally understand how it feels like you're trying to be destroyed. Sorry.

I didn't know you could get psychoanalysis on the NHS, I wish I'd have been offered that instead of CBT, which I hated. Unfortunately I'm not surprised that that they seem to be messing you around, the NHS Mental health system seems designed to set people back rather than helping them. That is my experience anyway.

It's idiotic to delay therapy for a year when you need it now, those assessors don't seem to know what they are doing. The assessors I saw were strangely out of touch, almost 'away with the fairies', and expressed odd attitudes towards Mental health. It wasn't what I expected.

In your case maybe the reason why they are delaying therapy is because you seem too high-functioning and there are people who they think need it more. How do you interact with the assessors? Do you wear clean clothes? Can you articulate yourself efficiently? If so, that can count against you. These people often have a simplistic attitude towards those seeking help for mental health problems, so if you can manage to 'keep up appearances' regarding the way you look or act, they don't think you are in need of therapy.

If you came across as overly fragile in the assessments perhaps they thought that you weren't ready for the emotional upheaval that psychotherapy could bring. I believe that It can be emotionally exhausting because, unlike CBT, it is very intense.

Either way, I hope you manage to sort this out and get the help you need at some point.
