Finding a Therapist

Postby Shocktreez » Tue Jul 12, 2016 4:23 pm

So I'm going to be returning to my university in the fall and previously I had been going to a therapist at my school's psychological center. He turned out to not be a good fit for me and the services provided by the school center were inadequate for what I need. So now I'm looking for good therapist within walking distance of my school. One of the pervious problems I had with my therapist was that I am transgender and while my therapist was affirming of my trans identity, he was unable to address separate problems I'm experiencing and was not even very enlightening with gender struggles. It felt like I had to put in all the effort while he just ask "what do you think you can do about that?"

Anyway, so now I'm looking for a new therapist, who can address some of problems (I refer to them as this because even after a year of therapy I was never given an official diagnosis.) and be accepting of my gender identity. I don't know if I want to go to a gender therapist since my gender identity is not causing issues but I would like to be able to get letters for surgeries from my therapist if I should choose to get surgery.

So should I go to a gender therapist and hope they can address my problems or try to find a therapist that is accepting, can address my problems, and won't try to focus exclusively on my gender identity?

I think the first issue is that finding a therapist within walking distance from your school might prove problematic. Not sure in which country youre living, but therapists are overflooded with patients, have long waiting lists and there arent enough out there. So I would rather do some probatoric sessions with people that you can still reach somehow in an acceptable timeframe, because there are a lot of crappy therapists out there, sadly. Taking one closest to you wont necessarily be the best fit.
Considering gender therapist I gotta admit I have no clue what that even is, to my knowledge a good therapist will be quite unaffected by gender or sexuality problems and see them just like any others. I'm also not sure if a therapist in your country does have the necessary authority to write letters to doctors, if you dont have already you should get that clarified, its possible you need an additional psychiatrist for that.
Another point might be to figure out what kind of treatment you want, if you rather orient towards behavioral, cognitive or analytical treatment, because this has indications for nt only tht type of treatment but also the length and to a degree the issues that can be addressed.

There are actually a lot of therapists in the nearby area. My college is in a big city. A gender therapist is someone who specializes in helping transgender folks, usually with transitioning and other trans specific needs. The reason why this is relevant is that in the state I'm in it is legal for mental health professional to deny care to people based on gender and sexuality. Though I don't anticipate this being too much of an issue since the city I'm in is pretty accepting.

I appreciate your advice on looking into different therapy types though. It is not something I have looked into a whole lot, so I will certainly check it out.
