Should I be writing things down to ask?

Postby John_A » Sat May 23, 2015 4:18 am

The title seemed a little vague so I'll explain here.

Ever since I've had a major change in my mental space (think of it as moving to a new house) a few months ago, I started writing a few things down. One is a journal of everyday things which I will reference later for the therapist. Another are initial questions for the first meeting. Another are a few pages of bulletpoint issues that I have put down on things that I would like to address and work through most of them. There's also a list of "Good things about me" which I get asked a lot with other therapists and always can barely speak with that.

I told my friend that I had this list and he said that it was stupid to do and counter-intuitive or something. I have no idea why he said that or what it meant and I'm wondering if anybody can shed some light on this. My mind is very fragmented and I have to piece it back together to form coherent sentences when I speak to others (probably a part of my Asperger disorder) so writing this stuff down is a lot easier for me.

So is it wrong? Am I doing something good?

I think that writing things down is a good way to express yourself and communicate with others. I have trouble verbally telling people how i'm feeling or remembering what questions to ask and writing things down and taking them to appointments or just keeping them for myself has been useful. If you find that writing is doing something positive for you then that's all that matters, not what other people think.

Yes, definitely! I think your friend is way off base. My therapist likes it when I write things down and has even put them in my file.
