Gender, Self & Disorder in Accounts of BPD

Hello there!

My name is Steve Young and I am currently studying for a doctorate in Counselling and Psychotherapeutic Psychology at The University of Surrey, UK. My doctoral research is on peoples’ experience and understanding of being diagnosed and living with Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD). I am looking to recruit participants who would be interested in taking part in one-to-one interviews, either by Internet video call, or by online text chat, to talk about their experiences of BPD as a diagnosis, what it means to them, and other dimensions, such as whether it has been a helpful or meaningful diagnosis, experiences of healthcare professionals, and anything else they individually think is important about BPD. I am particularly keen to speak to men and to women, and those who do not identify as gender-binary. Interviews are expected to last between one and two hours and would be at a mutually convenient time TBD.

In order to participate you would need to meet the following criteria:

1. To be at least 21 years old and a UK or US resident.
2. To have received a clinical diagnosis of BPD from a qualified diagnosing healthcare professional (e.g. psychiatrist or psychologist).
3. To have been living with the diagnosis BPD for at least three years.
4. Not to be in any current treatment programme for BPD (excluding long-term personal therapy).
5. To consider yourself sufficiently stable to be able to talk about your experience of, and thoughts about BPD, and its relevance to you and your life, for between one and two hours, without anticipating undue or excessive psychological distress.
6. To be able to describe the support systems in place that you would use were you to find participation particularly distressing (e.g. close friends, family, personal therapist, etc.) While the researcher will be available to discuss any difficulties in and around the interview, it is important to identify any significant personal risk to self in participating and to have strategies for coping with this. If interested, this is something that could be discussed with the researcher.
7. To consent to your interview being audio-recorded and transcribed, then anonymised and used for the research study.
8. To agree to provide written, signed consent of age, diagnosis and willingness to participate.
