Out of rehab, what should I throw away (medication wise)

Postby Jupiter777 » Tue Jul 11, 2017 5:38 pm

Hi, I've just arrived home from rehab and I have a few meds that I think I should throw away. I was also going to throw away my weed pipe, but I think i might've thrown it away already or my mom threw it away. Anyways, I have a GABA bottle. It's over the counter and it has never gotten me high before. But I also want to be aware of mood altering substances and i'm confused as to where GABA would fall in.
I know i'm safe with things like Trazodone and melatonin for sleep, but I take risperdal, so I think that's enough. what do I do about things that are over the counter?

Congratulations to you on your fresh start.
GABA is listed as a sedative. If you aren't currently prescribed the trazodone, melatonin and risperol I would toss them as well.
Good sleep should come naturally after awhile. If it doesn't, see your doctor. Let them know that you are in recovery and want to avoid anything narcotic.
While I was at a rehab, I gave a couple of my close friends permission to go through my room and empty out all alcohol and drug-related materials so that I could come back and have a 'clean', risk-free room.
Don't 'dare' yourself to use again. That's just silly. Get it all out of there so you don't have to think about it.
Get to meetings. Find a sponsor and surround yourself with a support group. Phone numbers are good if you don't drive (and are even good if you do).
I had to go back and live with mom after my rehab. It was not an ideal situation. Keep your ears open at meetings for a safe and affordable living arrangement.
Best of luck to you. :D

Thanks man. I found my pipe and threw it out. I also found my naloxone nose sprays for opiate overdose. I don't plan on relapsing, but I have friends who still use. I'm going to keep that around JIC.
It's better to have and not need it than need it and not have it.

I would put the decisions in the hands of someone you can trust. Give them everything and then ask for the stuff you think you need back. It has to be someone who will take the role seriously and challenge you. For me, that's my wife and to some degree my kids (youngest is 17, so they are basically young adults).
I think I have my head on straight again and it will be no problem for a while. Tonight because of logistics I had to pick up a prescription of something similar to something I have abused. I brought it home and gave it to someone else to see it had not been opened, count out the contents and then hide it somewhere. It almost seemed silly to have to do this, but what they don't know is while it was being filled I was in the cold meds aisle looking at generic DM syrup and sweating like a pig. I resisted but it is concerning that I went from being sure I have made a solid decision to walking half way up the aisle with a bottle in my hand before convincing myself to put it back.
I should be proud of myself, right? Wrong! I should be disgusted and I am.

Thanks for the reply. I KNOW I must stay away from all things containing DXM, while that wasn't my DOC, I used that sometimes to get high. But GABA I found to be under and Amino Acid, not a sedative. It has never gotten me high or had any noticeable effects, which I don't think would fall under mood altering substance. But I took half a melatonin, in rehab they said it was safe and we should use it. At least that's what I learned in the rehab I went to, which is one of the best in New York.

You are missing my point. I believe you that is almost certainly a safe thing to take and to control yourself. The point is I run every decision by someone when it concerns something I put in my body that isn't food. No exceptions. At some point I will give myself a little more freedom but not too soon. It's only been a couple of weeks since I came clean.
I didn't check in anywhere, just made a decision to give ongoing therapy for BP a better shot at success by opening up about the "self medicating" I had been doing to enhance my recovery. I can't take all the credit; I got a little push from the pdoc when she looked at my med list and gave me a "WTF?" reaction about the type and amount of adderall I had convinced my primary to prescribe for me. Also the alcohol I had been "sneaking" was a well known secret at home. But my wife was completely blindsided about the old leftover prescriptions that had disappeared (opioid pain pills, muscle relaxers and codeine syrup) and how often I had a nasty cough from drip that OTC syrup just didn't work for (that's the story I had been giving my primary; coming clean with her was as hard or harder than doing it at home).
So my advice comes from my pdoc and from a request from one of my kids (that crushed me) and not a well respected rehab center, but I have a lot of faith in it...

GABA receptor meds are described as having a 'sedative' effect. It is not a sedative drug.
https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/12195434
If one is still in early recovery, having it around is a risk. Don't 'tease' yourself by 'keeping it in case you need it'.
If you have an issue, see your physician. Avoid self-doctoring or saving old medications for future use.
That sounds like a set-up for a relapse to me. This is not a joke. Recovery is a life or death matter. Many who relapse never have a chance to make it back.
I know for myself that last time I used, I had no more chances left. I barely made it back.
I have heard that the recovery rate is more like 4%. This is a killer disease. Be one of those 4% please.
When I hear about why people went back out, I hear about 'planned use' a lot. Spontaneous relapse is rare (not that it can't happen), but the fall can usually be seen coming for awhile before it actually happens.
Maybe not by the addict themselves, but by those around him or her. Usually the addict gets so numb that they can't see that their recovery is in great danger until it is too late. Warning from others are hard to heed, because you know that only happens to others and couldn't possibly happen to you.
Let's be careful out there. :D

Even people without problems should take heed of this. My wife is no stoic; she would get a scrip for pain pills for some fairly mundane procedures, get it filled, take them one or two nights then put them in the medicine cabinet. She was an unknowing enabler. Those were opioids, which people are ODing on left and right. But I am way smarter. Obviously not; I was playing with fire and now I am joking about it. Today I am a reasonable person; tomorrow, who knows? Get rid of it or lock it up where I can't get it.
