Sitting for too long

Postby cc2 » Sun Apr 28, 2019 10:46 pm

HI, I'd like to talk about something I've been going through for a while and is a major bother.

As most people today, people tend to become less active as they spend more time in couches or in a computer in their daily jobs. Because of stuff like that, I gained two issues that bother me quite a lot.

The first is hemorroids. This is kinda an old problem and they sometimes bleed and make sitting being uncomfortable, specially after pooping. Infortunately, I tend to poop like once in 2/3 days and it hurts when I do it most of the time, which makes the problem worse. This makes a snowball effect, which is extremely unpleasant.

The second issue is feeling some sort of numbness in the thighs of the legs and pain in the lower back when sitting after a while. The first part is due to the part of the body that touches the chair/couch being in that position for too long, and this feeling happens like 30 minutes after being sitted. The second part doesn't always occur but in the end of the day i feel a small pain in the ending part of the spine due to supporting the body while being sitted.

I feel that even if i try to walk more or try to make intervals, these issues keep arising more often and I'm afraid this will one day have an impact when I get a job, which unfortunately will probably be something where I'm on a computer most of the time. What can I do about these 2 major issues? Thanks in advance.

I think for your hemorrhoids maybe you should drink more water and have more fiber in your diet, less processed foods and such. Also for the numbness (and hemorrhoids) are you able to get up and stretch intermittently at your job? Because that would likely help.

Thanks for your reply. I have een drinking more water and having more fibers in my diet but the problem didn't disappear. I get up and stretch a bit each 1/2 hours but that sensation ends up coming back after a while.

Eat yogurt with fresh fruit, and drink water. About the pain, do you have a rheumatologist? Go to your primary care doctor, tell him what you've been experiencing, and he can refer you to the proper doctor. Good luck, hope you heal.

I haven't told any doctor about the pain in the lower back, since it's something that doesn't bother me as much as the hemorroids. I have told about the hemorroids and I got something to relief them but they end up coming back.

I feel like I'm compressing something in my lower back from sitting too much in a computer chair.

If your workplace has a human resources physical therapist, I would talk to them. Worker injury from prolonged body positions or repetitive motion are something that can be looked into.
We have an ergonomics manager at work who raises benches for people who have to stoop or slouch for long periods of work.
He can issue orthopedic chairs, sit/stand chairs or donut cushions for those that need them for sitting. Foot stools, wrist braces and personal protection (safety glasses, ear plugs, gloves, etc) are provided as needed. We have group stretching exercises for a few minutes at break time.
Pay attention to your body if it is complaining. Injury at work can be cumulative, chronic and/or acute. Work shouldn't hurt. If it does, there is something wrong or you're not doing something right. Pain makes work that much harder if it takes away concentration on your tasks. Taking painkillers should be the last house on the block.
There are chairs for a kneeling position, because some people can't sit.
I had back surgery for pinched nerves (had to make room for nerves). This was causing hip and leg pain, numbness and tingling. I was also getting incontinent from it. It hurt to walk which made the restrooms feel so far away. Having a boss see me stumble or fall at work would be very bad.
Work wasn't the cause of my back problems, but my posture and unnatural body positions at work made the situation worse.
Talk to work and explain your concerns. Talk to your physician, who can then refer you to a specialist if necessary.
Best of luck to you. :D
