in my 30's and still get social anxiety

Postby alex7373 » Fri Jan 25, 2008 10:00 am

My social anxiety comes and goes. I don't get anxiety at work but I'm in my delivery van most of the time (I work for DHL)

If i worked in an office where i had to sit still all day I'm not sure i could do it.

i'm fine around strangers and people i come across at work. The offices i deliver to and pick up packages from i'm cheerful and talkative to the receptionists etc

its when i'm around other people in a social setting like a bbq or a party, large dinner group etc where my social anxiety really comes out. Sometimes i avoid going out socially because of it. The panic sets in and I make up an excuse not to attend so and so's wedding or show up for a party.

with women i'm ok as long as the woman isn't the type that likes to socialize a lot. But stuff like meeting her parents brings on some panic and social anxiety.

my social anxiety used to be worse. I dropped out of college because of it. Now i'm back in college...i go to a cal state university that has online courses and i've been taking all of my courses online...but next semester i will have to attend on campus because not all classes are offered online. I'm already started to get anxiety over the fact i will have to be in a classroom

what can i do to get over this anxiety?

Hi, alex7373! I think I know how you feel. I'd be anxious if I had to be in an office or in a classroom and I get anxious in places where there are a lot of people.
It's cool that you're comfortable with your job. I guess you could try to make one or two friends when you'll have to be in the classroom. Try looking for someone quiet who'll want to sit next to you when you have classes together. Maybe you could try to spend a little time in crouded places and see if you can get more comfortable with it. You can come here and talk about it when you feel anxious, when you'll be getting back from college or before you'll have to go there. I think that would calm you down a bit, talking helps me.
Sorry I can't come up with anything else right now. I wish you good luck!
