Jobs For People With Social Anxiety?

Postby CityMouse » Wed Sep 05, 2018 6:56 pm

After getting a call back for a very social job, my anticipatory anxiety went through the roof, to the point where I started hallucinating about being judged and harassed by people.

What are some decent jobs for people with social anxiety? I have a BA in English. Ideally I wouldn't have to go back to school.

Is data entry okay? I have been discouraged from doing that as one, according the people, it's very boring and two, it's about to get automated.

I have a long history of anxiety and depression, dating back 15+ years to middle/high school. My first job, in college, was food service - which was as bad as it gets. I worked several years in retail after that, also not a great choice for someone with social anxiety. A few years ago I abandoned any hopes of working in the field in which I earned my bachelor's, and went to trade school. I'm currently working as a skilled tradesman and love it. Not a career path for everyone, but it worked for me.

I've dealt with anxiety since I was about 4 (I'm 23 now) and a myriad of other mental health problems. I've worked in retail, house keeping, at an amusement park, and now I work in peer support (which is very social, I've had to adapt over the last 2 years).

I think the least anxious jobs I came across were ones where I'm stocking or have minimal contact with the public. I actually enjoy boring, repetitive things because then I know what to expect and my anxiety doesn't get out of control--because a lot of the times that's what anxiety is about, control. Social situations are very unpredictable and that can cause a lot of anxiety around what do we say. how do we act, are we being judged, e.t.c.

I would say try out a few things. It might make your anxiety sky rocket but you really aren't going to find what works for you until you give it a try. I found working in finances not very anxiety provoking because I was away from people most of the time and worked underneath the amusement park. Housekeeping also had minimal contact with people. I would not suggest retail. God. Never. Again.

Anyway, that's my two cents.
I like living in the world in my head because I'm in charge half the time.
