Back to school :/

Postby ribcaged » Sun Aug 27, 2006 10:16 pm

I'm going into my junior year of high school this year. it's the same school, with basically the same people, but i'm absolutely terrified. it's really not the supposed workload i'm afraid of, it's all the social interaction. i've been diagnosed with social anxiety and i've been through therapy & on medication for it and other things for awhile now, but the anticipation of it is overwhelming. any advice would really be appreciated.

Hey Ribcaged,
I feel your pain!! I, too, have social anxiety and am going into my sophomore year of high school. I'm pretty nervous, but I'm trying to tell myself that it will be nice to have a fresh start, know what I mean? That this year can be different if I really put the effort in, and that I can put the past years behind me and become a more stable person. If you try to have a different attitude towards it, it might be less intimidating to go back to school.
Good luck!!! You, me, and Oakchair are all gonna be okay.
Take care,
<3

Your post reminds me of my life at school!

I'm definitely suffering from social phobia. I think you're more comfortable than I was during my primaries and secondaries. I didn't speak a single word during those years. I didn't have any friends and I didn't answer even the teachers' questions. Some teachers smacked me, some teachers simply ignored me. What a dreadful school life! Fortunately, I managed to complete my school as schools in my country do not call for much social activities( I'm from a South East Asian nation).

Today, I'm still suffering from social phobia. I think I don't need to mention my symtoms here as the board clearly mentions all.

You're in a better position than me. Don't give up!

Walk in with your head held high. You really have to talk to yourself. I know it sounds crazy but it truly helps. You just have to keep asking yourself why you are feeling this way and is it because you think that these people are better than you? If that is the case then go over the reasons why you think that. You usually can't come up with too much. Also asking yourself why you should care can help too. When you really think about it, why should you care? What the hell do these people mean to you? Especially if they are going to mistreat you. When you really try to rationalize irrational fears like this it can sometimes make them slowly disappear. Try to be more observant of your mind and see what happens.
Goodluck guys,
Amy
