A danger to my family

Postby Lostson » Fri May 22, 2009 2:14 am

So my wife says that I do things in my sleep nothing new there but it appears I am sleep walking now too. Last night I was picking up the laundry basket and moving it around the room (in my dream I was carrying my sister). After I moved it a few times I remember going back to bed. Here is the scary one though the other day my wife was singing my praises for the good love making I did to her the night before. I told her I didn’t remember it at all! I didn’t recall anything from the time I went to sleep till I woke up the next morning she said my eyes were open whole time and I spoke to her my wife said it was just normal sex talk. Here is the Dangerous thing I have a paraphilia and most of the dreams I do remember circle around that quite frequently what if I do something to my daughter in my sleep.

Is there a type of doctor that I should tell this to and maybe they can help me get it under control?

Hi,

This is certainly worrying for you. I would go to your local doctor (i.e. - your GP) and tell him/her about your sleepwalking first. If you can get the sleepwalking under control, then there should be no need to tell him/her about the paraphilia issue too. So, just try to treat the sleepwalking first.

Update:

I talked to my regular doctor about the episodes I have been experiencing and they said that this was something to discuss with a psychiatrist. I finally got in with him this past week and he said he thinks it was something that “Geodon” the anti-psychotic I was controlling it. But since I stopped taking it he said could be the reason I got progressively worse so quickly. My psychiatrist said he wasn’t sure why I was doing it now since I had no history of it and it has begun in the last year or so. He is trying to increase my Anafranil to 400mg per day hoping that will take care of it. I have been on the increased dosage for 3 days and have not noticed a difference yet. I will likely give it a month before I return to my psychiatrist.

Hi,

You are making a mistake here, albeit a common one: Medication typically doesn't work in a matter of days. It can take weeks or months. Listen dude, please just get into th habit of taking whatever your doc has prescribed, and then get on with improving your life. Medication will NEVER just make you happy and make everything rosy. You have to put a huge effort into it too.

It happened again last night my wife woke me up screaming because I was punching her in the head as soon as I woke up I stopped but I hurt her pretty bad.

Lostson, you must sit down and devote some time to think about everything that has been happening; and then you must make a plan to make things better. Be as creative/elaborate as you want to be, okay? What you must never do is accept things the way they are. I never accept things when they are against me or when they go wrong. I look for ways out - that is how I have trained myself. C'mon my friend, I know that you can do this.

Go back to your GP and demand a referral to a sleep clinic, take it from someone who's been through the same kind of thing - shrinks know jack sh*t about how to cure a parasomniac!

Yet another update:

I went to a sleep center and they say they think my mild sleep apnea is the cause of these “night terrors” what she called them. So he said since I cant use a c-pap machine I am going to get a mouth piece to where and that should help. I am waiting for that to be made and the insurance to cover it and in the mean time I am still having these episodes. However, I haven’t been willing to take this lying down, so to speak. I am now working with a new psychiatrist and since most of the nightmares I act out against my wife where I hit her and stuff are from my nightmares of being abused as a child. My psychiatrist thinks the nightmares is a PTSD symptom and finding the cure to that will help stop the at least most of the night terrors. So I have been trying a new drug called Prazosin it is really for hypertension but I have been taking it for about 3 months. Within the last 3 weeks I have had fewer nightmares and also have only hit my wife or the wall in my sleep only once per week, not perfect but a big step forward.

Lostson, send me a PM because there's another chap here who is having the same problem, but I cannot recall his username. If you would like to get in touch with him, then send me the message to remind me to look him up.

Lostson, I also have hurt my wife (although only a little) during one of my sleepwalking incidents. They are getting worse and I am concerned about what I could do in the future. I don't mean to seem glib, but I believe that I would lock myself in our spare room and sleep there if things ever got out 'too much', rather than take drugs. Could you do that? Although maybe you have the drugs for other reasons anyway?
