Hi there, I have been suffering with this same dream for a few years and I am looking for help to try and prevent it as it is happening every night.
I am dreaming that I wake up and my brother in law has his hand over my mouth and nose trying to suffocate me. I try to scream but it's muffled. He is wearing lots of rings and his hands smell of smoke. He let's go and then tries to throw me on the ground and covers my mouth again! What does this mean and how can I get it to stop? Thanks

Welcome to the forum Stephen. I'm no expert or psych or anything. And I don't myself believe that dreams have a set meaning. [Like "dreaming of a book means you're going learn something."]
So I know it's a crap answer. But you're the best person to say what this dream means. With apologies for the questions.
Does it remind you of something that's ever happened to you? Or that you've seen happen to someone else?
How do you feel about your brother in law in general? Do you get on well? Do you trust him?
Does he wear rings like that? Or does anyone else you know? And smoke? Is it cigarette smoke or bonfire smoke or something else?

More than machinery, we need humanity.
More than cleverness, we need kindness and gentleness.”

Hi there, thanks for your reply. I have been having this dream for years. As far as I'm aware I've never seen this done to anyone and it's never been done to myself. I do have a slight fear of not being able to breathe.
He doesn't wear rings and it's a smell of cigarette smoke. I got a response from a different forum who advised me to act it out with him in person and get him to suffocate me for 45 seconds to see if that helped get it out of my subconscious mind.
What's your thoughts?
Thanks
