I can think of two reasons for why this might be.
The first being that there might be something you or him did during sex that isn't done with other partners. Like a position, intensity, setting, events leading to it, and so on. If it's about something like what I described, then maybe do that with other partners, and see how things go. Maybe it was the level of intimacy, which leads me to the next point.
You said that he was your 'lover'. Is it that you're not as in love with the other people that you've engaged in sex with? If that's the case, try to form intimate relationships, not sexual, but personal, and refrain from having sex until you find someone that you feel deeply in love with. I think this will not only ensure that you have a more intimate sexual experience, but also build up some craving for sex, and so once you finally do it, it would be more climatic.
