AMP1966: Duck is right. Effexor is an SSRI antidepressant.

He probably continued having RE after stopping the meds for no other reason than he had recurring bouts of RE while taking them and this caused him to get anxious and worry about ejaculation. Also if he is depressed then that can cause sexual anxiety too...big time.

He needs to try Wellbutrin which is a non SSRI antidepressant. It is actually used sometimes in combination with an SSRI to counteract the RE side effect. It's a pretty good antidepressant by itself but is not as effective as an SSRI for some kinds of depression and obsessive/compulsive disorders. Get him to try the Wellbutrin by itself first. If it's not as effective as is needed then start adding an SSRI starting with the smallest possible dose. He needs to find the right balance of the two drugs and this can take time.

AMP1966-

Wellbutrin is sometimes used by itself to treat non depressed men with RE. It actually raises arousal levels and that is the only effect it will have on you if you are not depressed. For men who suffer from anxiety (a common root cause of RE) the anti anxiety drug Buspar
which has no sexual side effects either, is used in combination with Wellbutrin with great success.

GOOGLE : Wellbutrin Sexual desire

Wellbutrin also helps women who have trouble reaching orgasm:

In case anybody is confused reading the article on Wellbutrin linked in the post above, BUPROPION is another name for WELLBUTRIN.

Dont be so rude. It's not "my spam".

Did you actually try this therapy?

Some people on sosuave.net forums said that this worked for them.

Thank you for responding! I feel so relieved. I can't believe my bf and I put our faith in what the doctor said without questioning it.

After reading your replies to my post, I check out some info on Effexor. For anyone else interested, the link below will prompt a dialog window so that you can view an extensive pdf file of literature and studies:
http://www.effexorxr.com - select "Prescribing Information" along left side.

Thanks again. Now I need to find a way to approach this with bf. I have my data, but he once tried Wellbutrin and said it made him edgy - but it could have been the discontinuation of the initial Lexpro. Maybe some Buzpar with the Wellbutrin can help (especially since it's non-habit forming) - Any thoughts?

Thanks :D

Effexor

Postby amp1966 » Wed Dec 07, 2005 6:39 pm

Comparing clinical trial data sheets of Lexapro and Effexor (depending upon condition being treated for), Effexor seems worse in relation to sexual side effects, specifically ejaculatory ones. My bf is a little stunned about this news.

I think I'll axe him if he considers seeing that whack again. :x

I have nothing but good things to say abour Wellbutrin. I definitely did raise my level of desire and although I have never had any erectile problems I found that also taking Viagra cut the numb penis sensation by about 70%.

I am not depressed and had just a few effects from the Wellbutrin other than being more horny. There was some "edginess" or a kind of "jittery" feeling but that went away after a couple of weeks. Another side effect that was a total surprise, a very nice surprise, I dropped 12 pounds. I also had some amazing technicolor dreams the first couple of weeks which I really enjoyed.

I now don't worry about the RE any more and have had no problems. My dodtor is now suggesting that I stop the Wellbutrin by cutting down the dose gradually. He says now that I have gained enough "confidence" in my ability to orgasm during intercourse that I may not need the Wellbutrin any more.

Stevie,

Sorry but the Actionlove people tend to spam groups like this. The Lins are a couple of Quack doctors who have lead many sexual troubled people down the garden path with their so-called "herbal" remedies.

Retarded Ejaculation is an extremely difficult sexual dysfunction to cure. In the worst cases of RE the cure rate is under 15% It needs competent treatment by medical doctors or qualified Sex Therapists.

There are only three known drugs that can help men with RE-

Buspar (to treat anxiety)
Wellbutrin (to treat low desire)
Viagra ( to counteract the numb penis symptom which is caused by low levels of arousal- a psychological problem, not a physical one.

I warn all who suffer from sexual dysfuntion to stay clear of Actionlove.com Don't waste your money.

I should clarify that in some types of RE drug treatment may not work.

For RE caused by Traumatic Masturbation Syndrome, mastubatory re-conditioning is the only known cure.

For RE caused by chronic masturbation and/or heavy pornography use, stopping all masturbation and porn watching, combined with psychotherapy is the treatment of choice.

If the chronic masturbation and porn use is diagnosed as an obsessive compulsive disorder, sometimes a drug combination therapy of an SSRI antidepressent and Wellbutrin (to counter the SSRI's sexual side effect of RE ---yes it IS ironic) will be prescribed

For low RE caused by low arousal levels due to lack of sexual attraction to the partner or sexual boredom, marital therapy can sometimes help but of all the causes of RE this is the hardest one to cure.

Drugs are most effective when the RE is caused by performance or other types of anxiety, which is the most common cause of RE.
