Original Language Having Long Lasting Effects?

Postby akirapug » Mon Nov 27, 2017 3:03 am

Hello!

I don't really know where to post this, but I thought this would be the best. If it is not the best spot, please tell me and I will move it!

I am a teenage guy growing up in America, but I was born and raised in Japan until I was around 1 or 1.5 years old. After moving to America, my parents obviously taught me English but decided not to teach me Japanese so it would not confuse me. I understand now that learning two languages at a young age does not harm development, but my parents didn't know this at the time.

I can speak a little bit of Japanese, but I don't really know how the grammar and stuff works. I speak it the same way people speak English I guess? Like, I don't have to think about the wording of a sentence or the grammatical structure of a phrase, I just kinda talk. My Japanese is nowhere near perfect, but I think its probably enough to survive if I was dropped off in Japan.

I've noticed more now than ever, that my English is not that great. I'm not able to write very well, and often I find myself having trouble just trying to explain basic ideas and form basic sentences. Is this because I was born and raised for 1 year in a Japanese speaking place?

Please get back to me! I'm very interested in what you guys have to say/think about this :)
