I'm not exceptionally good at anything

Postby XMissLucyX » Wed Jun 04, 2014 2:17 pm

I'm having a bit of an identity crisis because in the past I always saw my self as extremely creative and artistic but these talents have diminished as I've gotten older and I now realize I'm not exceptionally creative anymore and in fact I'm not really exceptional at anything. This is extremely upsetting for me because I always saw myself as a talented person and now I'm realizing I'm not.

Is that because you're comparing against more people now? It's easier to be talented in a class of 30. Than putting work up at DeviantArt or Flickr. And having hundreds of thousands of people to compare against?

Or because you're doing less work? It's hard to develop as an artist. Without continually pushing at the possibilities. And some work IS going to be mediocre. Just because that's the nature of exploring. Not every discovery is going to be amazing.

You are the same talented person you've always been. But talent is a starting point, not a destination. It gives you a nudge in the direction of developing skills. It isn't the same as that development itself. [Which can be really hard going!]
We think too much and feel too little.
More than machinery, we need humanity.
More than cleverness, we need kindness and gentleness.
