Problems with my boss

Postby Shai323 » Wed Jan 30, 2013 2:50 pm

I have this problem with my boss that I sometimes I misunderstand something he said mainly because I have a lack of a "bigger picture" about my field of work because I'm new (6 months) and I don't quite grasp how the system works as well as he does.

So when it happens I keep thinking "he thinks I'm stupid" and it ruins my mood. He also isn't very patient and sometimes has this "How can possibly not understand me?" expressions.

I should mention I have Asperger's syndrome. I also have some proof that I'm not stupid because I had my IQ tested by a clinical psychologist and got a score of 121. But that doesn't seem to make a difference.

Does anyone have any advice for me?

Thanks,
Shai

Welcome to the forum, Shai. Am I right in thinking that the problem is what you think his reactions and thoughts are? If so, there are two ways I can think of to tackle it. One would be to reframe how you're thinking about it. You can't read his mind and it might be that he's not thinking anything like that. Perhaps he's thinking "I can't believe I did such a bad job of explaining this the first time round. I have to do a better job this time." And that's why he looks cross, because he's angry with himself for failing you as a "teacher."

Or, if it seems appropriate, you could ask him. "Do you think I'm too slow in picking this up?" He might say Yes, which wouldn't be very helpful. But it would give you the opportunity to ask a followup question like about how he learned it. Or if there are other ways you could learn. Perhaps there's an excellent blog about the industry he could recommend. Or a short self-study course. Or another colleague could mentor you. But he might also say No, and be helpful in that way. Perhaps he helped create the system and that's why he knows it so well. Or you're learning several aspects of the role at once. Or it's just a big system and he understands that it takes a while.

More than machinery, we need humanity.
More than cleverness, we need kindness and gentleness.

If all this continues I think it's better for you to leave this job because no one deserves to be treated like this. I am sure that there are so many things you could do for living and there are so many people who will appreciate your qualities. So think about what is the best for you and act
