my 5 year old doesnt like men. do I need a woman dr?

Postby victoriasmommy » Mon Jan 07, 2013 3:29 pm

my 5 year old has been very shy always.
but in the past 6 months has stopped talking to my SIL and the parents of her friends, and her ballet teacher.
she isnt shy now though. she wants me to tell her friends about what she got for christmas. she says she just cant say anything to ppl who arent family or her 2 best friends.
I made an appt at the center for anxiety treatment in delray FL. anyone with any experience with them? And while she doesnt always look strangers in the eye she really doesnt like men usually.
Will the dr be doing the therapy with her alone? bc I really think a woman dr would have more luck or is that silly?

I suffered from SM when i was a child (age 4-10). I slowly got over it.

I had trouble relating to men when i grew up (i am a guy). Even today i have problem with older men; especially authority figures. Maybe having a male counselor would help your daughter relate to men better later in life.

Hi. it's probably because men are more intimidating than women, especially at her size! I know I've always felt more comfortable with women myself. I don't think you need a new doctor, though, it's probably good that she gets practice with men, because they're everywhere, and hard to avoid. Good luck to you and your daughter in whatever you choose!

Interesting. I also had SM as a child and had a problem with men at that age. My parents sent me only to female doctors and specialists (who I still couldn't talk to but at least was more comfortable around). I eventually grew out of it. But maybe, as a previous poster suggested, sending her to a male doctor would help her to become more comfortable. That is how CBT works right? best wishes!
