Confrontation Inquiry

Postby Snydesworth » Tue Jul 01, 2008 4:02 pm

I am not sure this is entirely the right forum (please redirect if knowledgeable)

If a patient is confronted with a situation where reality directly and undeniably contrasts their delusional beliefs how will they react?

A practical example:

Individual believes they possess magical powers (eg Telekinesis) but in a situation where they attempt to act out this belief (ie use the power) they are faced with a reality that they cannot perform the task...

If there was a resultant hallucination how would the patient explain the fact that the object had not moved? If hallucination was not experienced how would the patient react?

Hey,

From my experience, the patient will always claim to be right, even when evidence suggests otherwise. I have been a patient myself, and that is where I have obtained my experience in this area (i.e. - by actually holding conversations with such patients on a casual basis).

Because I didn't know how they would react, I just always agreed with them. However, I witnessed other people who would actually vehemently deny that the patient's delusions are correct and the patient would always find a way to make it seem as if they are right, and everyone else is wrong.

I'm not sure a schizotypal would be so vehment about his belief that he would make an issue of it. I think they generally half believe anyway, but have intense moments of belief that is instantly dropped when confronted by reality...for a while. Then it is back to believing.

I am always trying to move stuff with my mind.

I'm like bloody Sylar. He would make a pretty good candidate for a schizotypal.
