homelessness and schizophrenia

Postby xad » Tue Aug 09, 2005 1:07 am

It sucks that some people with schizophrenia are homeless. Why didn't they get on SSI and get support?

(I am trying to get on SSI and I hope they approve it before my mom moves. When my mom moves I will have no place to go and I might end up in a homeless shelter. I am in the middle of applying for disability, I don't need this #######4, I don't need to be homeless right now when I need a place to live the most. I need a place to stay until I get disability at least. I don't know what to do. I've checked into all the housing programs and there is nothing they can do so don't try offering advice, i'm just screwed)

THERE IS SOMETHING WRONG WITH SOME HOMELESS PEOPLE THEY ARE EITHER ON DRUGS OR JUST LAZY AND WOULD RATHER GO DUMPSTER DIVING THAN GET A JOB.

THE MENTALLY ILL WHO ARE HOMELESS NEED HELP, THEY NEED TO GET ON SSI AND GET A HOME OR THEY'RE GONNA DIE ON THE STREETS.

I am mentally ill and I sure in the hell dont want to end up on the street. That's dangerous and scary.

I think just about anyone living on the streets needs help. I don't think there are many normal, healthy, happy people who are just so "lazy" and would rather not get a job and so they end up on the streets. I can't understand why so many people assume that people in situations like this should just be able to pull themselves together and get a job  If it were that simple, they obviously wouldn;t be living on the streets in the first place. obviously something must be mentally or emotionally wrong to prevent someone from being able to do what is necissary to make money and have a place to live. The majority of people living on the streets have some form of mental illness or a severe drug problem or BOTH. Or some other type of serious problem going on.
And people with drug problems need help too. Drug addiction is a very serious problem, and the person should not be blamed for it. Drugs will basically cause many of the same or similar symptoms involved in schizophrenia.

but anyways, I figure the only way i will be able to survive is if i get accepted for SSI. I just called the social security office today and set my appointment. I've heard that i might have to apply several times before getting accepted. I'm real afraid of getting turned down. If i do, i'm fairly sure i'll wind up in a state hospital for most of the rest of my life. I can't work and i can't afford much of anything.

I agree with you, I think you have a better grasp of what homeless people are all about than I do.

I don't think you will be in a state hospital the rest of your life, you have to be really messed up to get put in one of those. You're lucky if you get put in a state mental hospital. Chances are, you'll be living on the street if you don't get Social Security. You'll be worse off than being in a state mental hospital. Way worse. Your best bet is to get social security. They may turn you down the first few times, but eventually you will get it. It can take up to 2 years to get social security. So make sure you have a stable place to live for the next 2 years. It's a lot easier to get social security if you have paperwork proving how your mental illness degraded your life. Like letters from your employer, school grades, letters from doctor. When you go to your disability appointment make sure someone takes you there, and explain to the guy how terrible your illness is.
You have to have severe schizophrenia to get disability. It doesn't matter if you do or not, you will get it if you push hard enough, and you might have to hire lawyers. You could hire the lawyers right now they will take 25% of your award payment, but they are free to begin with. I am using the lawyers from www.allsupinc.com...

Good luck with your disability case, just keep after it and you will get it. Then you can get medicaid, and there is probably housing programs for you.

Remember, if you get a lawyer you might get disability faster.

Medicaid is a government program, it helps pay for medication, doctor visits, and hospitalizations.

Here in Spain we only have the Social Security system that allows everybody go to the doctor, but people who are not insured have to pay the medication themselves.
