Antipsychotics?

Postby Lucitania » Sun Apr 24, 2005 8:20 am

Are any of you on antipsychotics? The doctors want me to try them...I'm scared because I just came off of being highly addicted to Paxil for 4 years...Are there bad side effects? Which kind should I stay away from? Thanks.

This is a link to information on antipsychotics. It's written by a Dr Breggin, he is a doctor with a concience. Antipsychotic drugs are awfull, I just cant recommend them. 50 years ago they used to just labotomise patients but their family and friends complained. Antipsychotic drugs do the same thing basically as a lobotomy, they disable the patients brain so it doesn't work. These meds don't target anything specific in the brain *they just disable the patients mind in one way or another depending on the brand*. These antipsychotic drugs can increase the risk of violence and suicide, they cause weight gain, diabetes, stroke, heart attacks and many other side effects.

Have you tried alternatives?

Have you typed Gluten and Schizophrenia into google?

I have tardive dyskinesia from taking anti psychotics for for years 25 years ago, it's horrible. Your doing the right thing asking questions. I hope the link helps.

Hi! Thank you so much for that website, I couldn't believe how terrible these meds are. My mom is saying I have to take them if I want to remain living in the house...I may have to resort to pretending to take them. I'm really sorry to hear you have tardive dyskinesia now because of the meds, it makes me so angry to know that doctors just dish out harmful meds, I'm sick of it. I hope things get a bit better for you. *hugs*

I am on risperidone which is an anti-psychotic. I have not experienced any harmful side effects and I lead a very normal life. If you do not take medication, it is very likely that your condition will get worse and harder to treat. Don't be afraid of taking medication, they are a lot better now than they used to be.

Lucitania,

Thanks for your kind words.

Thats no good about your parents regarding meds. When I was going through similar stuff years ago, I would just conform. All the inpatients knew that was your ticket out of hospital, was just conform. Back when I was a psych patient (1980-85) the hospitals were full of punk rockers. I was one of them. I'd get thrown in with green hair and punk rocker clothes. To get out you needed nice clothes and nice neat combed hair, smile, nod and be pleasant. Once you did that, you were out.

What I'm saying is play the game a bit and things should improve. I know this sux but it's the way it is.

Take care of yourself and good luck.

I know what you mean...I dress pretty gothic, have for years, and I was in a psych house kind of thing for two and half weeks. They broke me down and I pretended to be better and discuss my 'feelings' and thats how I got out.
Thanks for your advice, I'll be careful. ;-)

yea, playing the game is always good, it worked for me i got out on abilify and an antidepressant in 5 days! lol haha suckers! but i was restless as a toddler, ablify has a horrible reaction where you can get panic attacks, restlessness, your body can seize up, paranoia, delusions, all the great stuff you are already experiancing, but worse and drug induced! soi wouldn't reomend ablify, but hey it might work for you, we're differant, but anyway, i on respridel right now and it seems to be working just fine, my hallucenations are almost all gone, and the paranoia isn't as bad:) good luck!
somtimes, it's like i want to touch these lights, and give into them become them, just a flash for a moment~in this world
