neuroleptic malignant syndrome caused by psychotic drugs

Postby tazz7432 » Wed Aug 15, 2007 9:30 pm

about 2 years ago i was on a antipsychotic drug( fluphenazine, dipixol) given to me by injetion every 4 wks, by my doctor. One month when i was due my doctor wasnt there, so had to see another doctor, but this doctor gave me the injection incorrectly and i ended up having a bad reaction to the drug, which lasted a month, the bad reaction turned out to be neuroleptic malignant syndrome,i found this out through the internet. The symtoms i was having was, breathing problems, tremors, restlessness and having spasm in my head, this lasted for a month ,during the month i went to the emergeny department three times, none of the nurses didnt know what was wrong me , so sent me home. i fought i was going to die because i had breathing problems.

since then i have had short and long term memory problems, cant remember films i have watched, idont feel emotions like i used to, like feeling happy, sad and dont get sexual feelings, cant drink cause i cant get drunk no more or get high from drugs. i have told people about this, but no one can do anything about it. i think it has caused some sought of damage to my central nervous system which cant be repaired.

i should have sued my doctor because if this ,but i think its a bit too late now, so i have to live with it.

Are you still on some antipsychotic drug? do you have psychosis on top of the symptoms you described?

the drug that i was on was an antispychotic drug to deal with the effects of schizophrenia, hearing voices and seeing things. i dont get any feelings now with what happened. i was thinking about getting a brain scan to see what damage the drug has done.

Did you seak treatment? NMS can be successfully treated.

I don't think, if you had NMS, that it was caused by the doctor giving you the injection 'wrong'. It is just a reaction to certain neuroleptics; usually occurs soon after starting a new drug but can appear well into a certain drug therapy.

If you believe you have it you must see a doctor, to get a proper diagnosis and treatment, especially if you still have symptoms.

(((hugs))) Must have been a really scary time for you. Hope things get better.

The symptoms you are having are probably EPSE and not NMS. NMS is a potentially life threatening endocarditis caused by neuroleptics. It is relatively rare, presents usually with a fever, high heart rate, sometimes chest pain etc. If any of this happens while on neuroleptics, you should get to the emergency room quickly for blood tests.

EPSE is a fairly common set of side effects experienced by people taking antipsychotic medication. Symptoms are things like muscle stiffness, involuntary movements of limbs and head, tremor, "restless legs" (where you feel like you need to walk constantly) and a bunch of others things. It is treated with medication like Benztropine or Diazepam depending on the exact symptoms.
