Dealing with Anxiety and Psychosis (Abilify)

Hi all,
Currently started taking abilify 10mg to reduce paranoid thoughts and delusions, but I'm finding I have a constant state of fear and anxiety that seems to come from somewhere unrelated to the paranoid thoughts. As well I'm feeling completely demotivated, depressed and the thought of doing anything makes me anxious.

Wondering if anyone has had experience with abilify and if it gets rid of these depressed and anxious moods?

Abilify works pretty good for me. I'm not as tired as when I was on invega. I still get anxiety and paranoia but it comes and goes. Different meds work better than others. It usually takes a couple of weeks for the drug to work. Maybe ask your doc if you can try another or add something with it. I also take paxil and lamictal.

I would ask your pdoc. A mood stabilizer like Lithium might help keep you more even keeled. Although it's mostly used for bipolar, I've read that it can help schizophrenia as well. Benzodiazepenes (Valium, Klonopin, Ativan) are helpful for anxiety and getting much needed sleep although they can be addictive. Otherwise you might ask about adjusting dosage or changing meds.

It sounds like your psychosis is being managed well by the Abilify which is its job. Abilify is an atypical antipsychotic agent. On the other hand what you need perhaps is another agent for anxiety and mood stabilization. Valproic Acid also is known as Depakote is good for this, as is Lithium which is the gold standard treatment. You must discuss these things with your pdoc though, he or she is the most qualified person to determine which changes if any are necessary and proper.

I'm on Abilify, 10mg as well, and I find it doesn't do much for anxiety. I would also suggest either finding a way to reduce the anxiety without adding another medication, or if you're okay with adding another medication, talking to your doctor. I might go with a combination of both. Hope all is well!

If I were you, I would avoid Welbutrin as that could make you even more anxious.

I’m on 400mg monthly depot and apparently it isn’t touching my schizophrenia .. haven’t had the anxiety with it but I find it does make me more awake ..

Wellbutrin is horrible when you already have anxiety.
